Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam

Hi Guys

I've got such little experience with travelling and thought maybe someone could shed some light on my situation!

I've got 3 weeks, from 3rd December off work as I am moving jobs and was thinking of travelling through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Is this enough time to see these 4 countries? Also are there any places in particular that I should be seeing? I could possibly take another week if it would allow me to see substantially more of these countries!

Many thanks

W

No you dont have enough time for 4 countries in 3 weeks, 5 days per country, is not going to cut it. I would focus on 2 depending on your interest? Islands and Scuba diving? treks? Waterfalls/Kayaking? Temples and Wats?

Thailand Laos or Thailand Cambodia.

A whole 3 weeks? Man, you missed out Burma, Malaysia and Singapore!

Seriously, pick two only - and even then you'll only get a taste of each.

THE most basic error of inexperienced travellers is that they try to pack too much into too short a time.

Pick two, consider your interests, read the book, map out a route. Not as hard as you think. Once you've done that, you'll get better responses if you ask specific questions.

Do-able if you really want to see all 4 countries. Fly to save travel time.

You should use Thailand/BKK as a base to get to Viet Nam. I suggest you start in Hanoi (1 or 2 days is enough then head south to Danang, Hoi An (3 days here is good) and end up at HCMC for a few days.

Depending on what you want to see in Laos and Cambodia, you will have to make plans from there. e.g. Lao - you can fly back to Thailand and head up to Nong Khai and cross into Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang.

Happy travels.

To be perfectly honest i would cut it down to one Country for the three weeks .. To even think about trying to do four Countries in three weeks is insane in my opinion , even by cutting it down to two it's still going to very chaotic ....
One country , three weeks means you can experience say either Thailand , Cambodia , Lao or Vietnam at a reasonably relaxed rate of travel ...

If this is your first trip to South East Asia then i would suggest Thailand , as the Transport infrastructure is much better developed than any of the other Countries that you have mentioned and therefore it's going to make it easier to make the best of your short period of time ...

Good luck and enjoy ..

Ah cheers guys, you've been a massive help! I will have to get a guidebook and see exactly what takes my fancy! Just out of curiosity, if I were to leave out one of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, which would you guys suggest I leave out?!

Thanks again!

Anchor for shore in Cambodia, and the Mekong delta. I would not bother going up north in Vietnam. and a little bit of beach time in Thailand. have fun.

Thailand offers a lot, and 3-4 day side trip to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap Cambodia would round out the must see/do for SE Asia. Thailand offers big city partying (Think The Hangover) Great beaches and islands, highlands/rural/treks/watefalls, Temples, Markets, and ancient cities.
Maybe start in BKK, head to north, then back to BKK, fly in/out to AWT SR, then head to islands to relax and recharge, then back to BKK and fly home.

Laos really needs 2 weeks, and Vietnam needs 3 weeks minimum and thats a rush.

I think Thailand makes a great entree into the region, get the hang of things, enjoy the exotic culture, exotic food, and great tropical beaches and atmosphere. Add AWT in Cambodia, a jaw dropping temple complex, fun town and neat area, its also a Unesco WHS.

You can do Thailand - Cambodia for 3 - 4 days and Laos for 3 - 4 days :)
For Vietnam it's kind of pretty far.
For Thailand if you're coming in December visit Andaman coast like Krabi (Lanta Island,Phi Phi) ,Phuket, PhangNga (Khao Lak),Trang (Koh Mook,Koh Kradan) to the northern Chiang Mai,Chiang Rai, Sukhothai.
But choose to visit 2 countries would be great!

You could also put CM in a nice travel ittinary.

Start in Bangkok, take a train to Ayuttayah to see some temples, take the night train to Chiang Mai, stay there for 2 or 3 days and experiece the life in the north. Go on to Chiang Kong, cross the Mekong and take a boat down to Luang Prabang. Stay a couple of days in and around Luang Prabang.

From Luang Prabang you can cut short with a flight to Samui and spend some days on the beach.

This way you will see 2 countries and have some beach days.

But, you will only see 2 countries, to experience SEA it takes much more. I staid 5 days in Luang Prabang and could have easily extended
