2Totally agree, travel in Morocco is slow and what's important is to slow down and experience the country.
If you decide to head for Fez (largest preserved medieval medina in the world) and cultural capital of Morocco, you could do side trip such as an overnight in Chefchaouen which is about 4 hours from Fez.
Alternatively an overnight to Ifrane and Azrou which are a lot closer and you can see the wild monkeys and volcanoes.
If you head for Marrakech (Crosby Stills and Nash fans) you could cross the High Atlas mountains (4-5 hours) and do an overnight trip to Telouet and Ait Benhaddou.
Alternatively head 40 miles south of Marrakech to Imlil for walks in the mountains, see post #13 at http://www.morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/showthread.php?t=304

3We went to Morocco for two weeks some years ago. Spent most of the time in Essaouira (really nice, friendly, slow town), and then some days in Marrakech. Can recommend both places! If you go to Mrrakech, the trip to Essaoira is quite easy. We liked the contrast between the two places.
Marrakech for the souk, the hammams and sighseeing in general. Essaouira for the charming small medina, camel rides (really touristy but great fun) and windsurfing.

it's now 3 days ago that we are back in Germany, we just spended 5 days there, but all this 5 days were full of action and pretty cheap.
We arrived in Marrakech at 8pm and had to go at 3am.
We are to girls of 19.
1.Day: Marrakech: Having dinner at Jama El Afna
2.Day: Imlil: Just 2 hours away from Marrakech with the taxi, and we walked up 4 hours to the refuge (3200m above the sea level)
3.Day: Toubkal: we went up to the highest position of the high atlas (up and down 4 hours), and we went at the same day back to Marrakech and needed firstly a Hamam; we spend again a great evening at the Jama El Afna with people we meat at the refuge
4.Day: Essaouira: surfing, riding camels and swimming at the beach; going in the late night to a fishmarket and ate the best fish ever in a restaurant without any food (bcause you have to bring your own one)
5.Day: Marrakech: after playing football at the beach of Essaouira we went back to Marrakech; did some shoping and had lunch
