Accommodations in Can Tho and Chau Doc

Hi fellow travellers -

I don't see a recent posting on this so thought I'd ask:

I'm planning on visiting both Can Tho and Chau Doc in November and am thinking about doing a homestay.
1. Is it worth it? What is the quality of homestays like?
2. How easy is it to arrange? Do I just step off the bus and wait for someone to approach and haggle or am I better off booking in advance.

If not a homestay, what are accommodations like in these areas and how easy is it to find? I'm not looking to do a backpackers / hostel and would prefer to pay a bit more for a decent nights sleep. At the same time, I don't want to spend the first 2 hours after arrival searching for decent accommodations.

Apologies if I have missed a posting and if this is redundant!

Cheers.

I stayed at the Thuan Loi in Chau Duc. It was nice enough, I got an aircon room for $12 a night. It's right by the river. If you are taking the boat into town, it's a short distance to the right (north) of the pier.

in Can Tho, you can look for Xuan Mai 1,2,3. There're 3 Xuan Mai, the same owner, and the price from $10-$15/night. Good location, near the river, market.

If you go to Vinh Long try the Nam Thanh Home-stay in An Binh over on the island - from memory the price was VND225,000 which included a huge dinner and breakfast. They're part of Vinh Long Tourist Co. who can arrange boat trips etc.

In Can Tho the First Hotel on Ngo Duc ke was pretty good value - clean and near the market but away from the immediate backpackers. There are plenty of hotels on the streets leading off the river front.

I staid for christmass in Can Tho for a couple of days.

I really enjoyed my days. I found a friendly english speaking boat driver who took me and my girlfriend around in the Delta. Saw lots of nice places you usualy don't go as a tourist. One day he took me to his friends and we had beers and snacks somewhere in the middle of nowhere :-)

Can Tho has some quite big business hotels. I made a good deal online at one of these hotels. So you might check that on the hotel websites.

Thanks everyone. It seems like everyone who went to Can Tho and Chau Doc did a hotel stay rather than a home stay. I'll look into all the suggestions.

One more question if I may:
I was planning on spending one day each in Can Tho and Chau Doc; likely arriving in the afternoon, and leaving in the following afternoon. Is this worth it or should I just stay in one place for two days? I want to get to Chau Doc to get to Cambodia.

Thanks again for all the advice.

Cheers,

Simon

staying 1 day in each city means you see nothing at all. If you wanna go for the morning tour to see the floating market - which is a really good one - you will be back in the afternoon, but then you have only seen floating market. I suggest you focus on just 1 city.
