An ambitious road trip from Brno to Ulaanbaatar
Hi all,I am currently in the absolute genesis of my planning and preparation but, i am wondering if anyone here has any experience of driving through Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan?
I am working in the Czech Rep and i have approx 5-6 weeks of holidays in July time and i have developed two plans; A: drive from Czech through Ukraine, Russia and hook back through St Peterburgh and ride through Latvia etc and get a ferry either from France or from Bergen in Norway. I am not too concerned with plan A, as i believe it to be achievable but...
Plan B: Czech, through Moscow and straight to Ulaanbaatar - 3700 miles. Then work my way West through Kazahstan but due to the roads there mainly by Russia back to Kiev then Czech.
My question are plentiful but mainly concerning roads, particularly quality and average speed and refueling capabilities along the way. Also, has anyone done the Mongol Rally ? As this follows a similar route. Time is my main enemy and i m concerned about the quality of the roads and the effect this will have on my time.
Finally, and importantly, i am planning on doing this by Motorbike!

I wrote a guide about driving in Central Asia with some specific info about each country, I hope this will answer some of your questions. You can find it here .4
HelloThis trip is absolutely possible. I did something similar in 2008, see our map and pictures on www.centralasia2008.com
A few comments: Lonelyplanet is a great forum, I got a lot of information and help from here.
- driving and refuelling, no problem at all, common sense, you fill up wherever you can, aks for local advice.
Reports about bad road conditions and sick driving style of local people are mostly exaggerated. Common sense and respect helps all over the world. Caravanistan has some good advice.
If you allow me to suggest a route more south, you will experience better spectacular landscape and wonderful people everywhere. I feel driving 2000km through Russia can get boring. I would forget the idea about starting in Norway, with a 3 day budget in Norway, you can travel 3 weeks in Central Asia. If you need advice on Norway, I live currently in Oslo.
Try to get as quick as possible through expensive (and boring in comparison what you will experience) Europe and Turkey.
What about driving a similar route as we did, Europe - Turkey - Georgia - Azerbaijan - Turkmenistan - Uzbekistan - Tajikistan - Kyrgyzstan - Kazakhstan - Russia - Mongolia - and back via Russia, Moskva, st. Petersburg...
You can shortcut from Azer, Uzbek straight to Kazakhstan.
I am going on a short trip to Georgia and Armenia end of November, flying there, renting Lada Nivas and see again Georgia. This country is amazing.
Please update us on your plans, would be interesting to hear...
