Go to Amarin Plaza building, BTS Chit Lom station.
Walk in via the sky walkway (in direction of BTS Siam Station) and go to the rear of the same floor. about half a dozen of outdoor stores there with the real stuff. Everything there.
Better selection than the Central Department stores.

Don't associate books with that place, but hey, might be anyway.
You exit sky train station the opposite way than going to Central however. It on the left hand side then, one past the Maneeya Center.
Directly across from the intercontinental and holiday inn.

Bikes, tents, stoves, any outdoor stuff, scuba, whatever. Not cheap places however.

@wonderingtsar2 Thanks for your advise. Maybe come and have a look first to what's inside my bag. A cheap knock-off bag is good for putting in the corner of my room. I need a workhorse. A bag that will carry my luggage for another 11 months.

Just for the record, I've bought a Deuter bag at Siam Paragon's dept store. Yes it was expensive (think 8000 baht), but it was no more expensive than the same bag in my home country. So I am a happy man. I did not expect to get a quality bag for 1000 baht.
