Penestan & Sayan Walking Tour UbudMy husband and I find Lonely Planet recommendations very helpful and really enjoyed the Campuan Ridge Walk but we WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS WALK. We were in Ubud in September and when we got near the track near the Sayan Terrace Hotel had a man tell us the way to go and then follow us down the track which at some points was straight down and we had to scramble on our bottoms. At the bottom was a farm with a locked gate with an old lady who refused to let us through until we payed. The man who followed us was translating and explained there were more gates to go through and that he would take us if we payed him. We refused and agreed to pay the lady 30,000rp as getting back up the track would have been very difficult. This area is very isolated and further on a man with a rifle on his back started following us. We then came to another locked gate and definitely did not feel safe especially when this guy started following when we decided to backtrack. He was not being threatening (except he was there) and he spoke to us when we passed him. When an old man appeared at the locked gate we decided to turn around and quickly payed him 20,000rp to let us through! When I told our hotel what had happened the staff member said he probably had the rifle to protect his crops but I did feel he was just saying what he thought I wanted to hear. We had not seen anyone with a gun anywhere else in Bali and surmised he may have been there as an added incentive to pay the money to get through the gates but really we have no idea. All in all not a nice experience as the rest of our trip we had had no problems.

1A very confusing and misleading post.
You start off by saying that you really enjoyed the Campuan Ridge Walk and then you start talking about the Sayan Terrace Hotel which is nowhere near the Campuan Ridge, but rather is along the Ayung River Gorge.
In short, you didn’t go on the Campuan Ridge Walk which starts at the Ibah in Campuan. Moreover this walk is very easy and with no part of it being anything like straight down.
Read this travelogue about it and you’ll see the errors in your post right away.
And let’s not over dramatize this rifle thing. It could only have been a .177 air pellet gun which indeed farmers do use to protect their crops from birds. Ownership of firearms is strictly prohibited in Indonesia and the only time you’ll see one is if you happen to spot the TNI on maneuvers. What you surmised is totally wrong.

2I am sorry this report was misleading. I indeed was not talking about the Campuan Ridge walk but the Penestanan & Sayan walk which was the title of the post. That is interesting what you said about the air gun. I at know point said I understood what the whole incident was about but just what happened and how we felt.

3A slightly rough reply?
(Aside from the mistaken location/post subject title) My experience was very similar, but I was not intimidated, and am physically able to make any climb back up. I have since been to the area several times, and respect the people who live there, and go very gently when passing through.
Perhaps the future L.P. description would do well to make mention of these possible complications, where other listed walks do not have the possible property easement restrictions.

4“A slightly rough reply?”
I don’t think so because the original post was totally misleading about one of the most wonderful and easy walks to take in the Ubud area, that being the Campuan Ridge Walk.
“(Aside from the mistaken location/post subject title) My experience was very similar…”
Well then, where the hell did you take YOUR walk?
There is absolutely nothing confusing about the Campuan Ridge Walk unless of course you require an Eagle Boy Scout with a compass to accompany you.

5Easy now; you don't have to take that tone, Made...
The title of the original post was the walk she was referring to, she just didn't make that clear in the first sentence of her post when she complimented the Campuan Ridge walk.
And I, was also referring to the Sayan/Penestanan walk with my comments.
I well know the difference between the two.
I'm sure that you just don't want there to be any misinformation that the Campuan Ridge walk is not a wonderful, easy, and beautiful excursion just outside the center of Ubud.
