Tongariro Northern Circuit expensive

I'm going to New Zealand in a month, and I'm planning to see Tongariro National Park around the end of November/the beginning of December. I'm thinking about doing the Tongariro Northern Circuit walk, as I would like to do some trekking for at least a couple of days. The only catch is that the walk is quite expensive - $850 according to this web page: http://www.newzealand.com.au/tours/tongariro-northern-circuit. Therefore I would like to know if any of you are familiar with a cheaper option to the Tongariro Northern Circuit, preferably a walk which lasts at least two days and a walk as beautiful as the Tongariro Northern Circuit. It does not necessarily have to be in Tongariro National Park.

Hope you can find the time to help me.

no need for a guide, you need transport and to book the huts which are about NZD 30 a night. Ketatai hut is out of action due to volcano damage.

look on doc.govt.nz for availability, hut facilities etc. Shuttles from National Park village run at about $30 too.

So it is safe enough to do the walk without a guide?

nothing is safe. However the walk will be well signposted as it is a great walk. You are responsible for making sure you have the right equipment and clothing, getting yourself fit enough, organising and carrying all your food and cooking equipment, plus suitable sleeping bag. You also need to check the forecast and make your own decision as to whether it is safe to start or continue the walk.

All information on the DoC website.

I agree with neverwinter - you can do this walk easily without a guide, the tracks in New Zealand are generally very well signposted.

Please check for volcanic activity however, Tongariro volcano has been active this year.
