2I used to live in SGN. If you are looking for a backpacker's place to stay, go to Pham Ngu Lao/Bui Vien St. It's a lot like Khao San Road in BKK. If you want something nicer, downtown hotels near the Chavelle or Sheraton are nice. Also, it is best to rent a motorbike to get around, or if you are looking for a taxi, use only Vinasun or MaiLinh. The other ones are mafia rip-off taxis who charge you western rates. Also, be careful since there are immitation Vinasun/MaiLinh taxis. There are also many 1 day tours of the city available at travel agencies in the Pham Ngu Lao area. I was never up north in Nam, the farthest north I went was to Dalat. Also, Phnom Penh is a cool place to see, but the history of it with the KR is sad. If you are single, the riverfront bars are a cool place to see at night. Also, to get around the city, I offered $2 US and usually the tuk-tuk drivers were okay with it.

6so the route is BKK to Changmai to laos get visa in Bangkok for Vietnam easy or if veinetianne then do konglor caves and head back to Vientinane to opick it up before heading to Vietnam note the date you arrive inn Vietnam the 28 day visa countdown begins ie day of flight vientianne to Hanoi. I stayed real darling but hanoi to old city is vietnam airlines bus just down 1 km to Old city where most back packer places are. then as previous down to HCMC and across to Cambodia spend a few days on beach Koh Chang take bus fromBattanbang to Paillin border and on to Trat and beach before bus to airport from trat and away.
