Hi,Look I was first there as a young seafarer (15 years old) and you pair are bricking it. Get real, mid twenties and afraid to let go of your Mum's hand? Safe country (not) without the odd problem but just keep aware.
You will do fine, if you just use a little common sense. If you do not meet up with anyone before you go you will soon bump into some buddies. Or better still do as I do travel solo, does not mean you are totally alone but just free do do as you please.

OP:SE Asia is a good bet for a first trip solo abroad. Even at the age of 56 I cannot imagine going any other way. The locals (and sometimes others) in Thailand, Viet Nam, Laos, etc often ask me why I travel alone. I reply, 'would you have stopped to talk to me if I was with someone else?'
You will have no problems meeting others, be they fellow visitors, ex-pats or locals.
Enjoy yourself, believe me the feeling of being stranded in a foreign (and initially strange) place will go in no time.
