Another itinerary help thread! ~12 days over New YearsHi all, I'm starting to put together a plan to visit Peru this new years. Could you all look over this rough itinerary and give me some suggestions? We're going primarily for the natural beauty and the native american ruins; shopping/drinking/dining is secondary (though I hear the food is amazing ).
22 Dec: Fly into Lima, probably via IAH (I'm coming from DFW and my friend is coming from PDX).
23 Dec: Explore Lima
24 Dec: Bus to Pisco. Sandboarding in the afternoon.
25 Dec: Paracas National Reserve
26-29 Dec: Chivay/Arequipa/Colca Canyon. Not sure what the best way (logistically) to see Colca canyon is...thoughts?
29 or 30 Dec through 2 or 3 Jan: Fly to Cusco. Machu Piccu, and Manu National Park are definitely on my list.
2 or 3 Jan: Fly home from Cusco, CUZ-LIM-IAH-DFW/PDX. Need to be back at work on the 4th, so would leaving on the 2nd be better?
Any specific advice or thoughts on this itinerary would be fantastic! Also looking for travel advice for Lima -> Pisco -> Colca Canyon, as well as hotel advice/recommendations for the whole trip. Budgeting <US$75 night on average, we don't mind splurging a few nights if we save it elsewhere. Thank you!

1Logistically, the best way to see the Canyon is with a company. And probably with your time frame, over two days.
You only have time to really do one Machu Picchu or Manu N.P and not both. But thats due to time. Pick one.
Budget wise, book into hostels or posadas. Go to hostelbookers or hostelworld. A dorm bed will be about 10 bucks a night. More for a private.

2As far as long distance buses are concerned, be careful with Christmas time and New Year. Buses will not be running from December 24 noon until sometime in the afternoon of December 25. Same applies to December 31 noon until January 1 afternoon. And they will be crowded the days before and after. As you are planning to take a bus from Lima to Pisco on December 24, you better pay attention to this situation. It may be a good idea to skip visiting Lima on the 23rd and take a bus to Pisco on that day.
Bus companies to get to Pisco/Paracas are Cruz del Sur (several buses per day) and Soyuz/PeruBus (continuous service day and night, get out at San Clemente, taxi from there to Pisco/Paracas). Of course, the above also applies to these companies.
You plan a visit to the Paracas National Reserve, but possibly you mean the boat tour to Islas Ballestas. That is the popular motive to go there, while some also take a tour to the Paracas National (desert) Reserve as an add-on. Until the earthquake of 2007 Pisco was the place to go for all this. As it was heavily damaged it got replaced by the nearby village of Paracas.
