It is the overland option that will be very expensive. To cross the China/Burma border you must be part of an organized tour group and it requires expensive permits. Check on your air options. If flying to Yangon from Kunming is expensive, look at flying to Bangkok and taking a cheap AIr Asia flight from there.2
I know an Australian couple trying to do the so called Burma Road around 2004 to 2005. They visited the Myanmar embassy in Canberra and got their visa for Myanmar. They travelled to Kunming and arranged all the paper work with Chinese authorities for travelling the Burma Road. Arriving at the border post everything was alright at the Chinese border post but the Myanmar border post refused entrance to Myanmar. The reason given was that they should have applied for visa for Myanmar in Kunming instead of Canberra. This is delicate paperwork which can fail on the smallest details. I have no idea if it´s possible to travel this way today!3
forget doing it by land...by air is expensive...as above mentioned, you could try flying Kunming to Bangkok then Airasia, but international flight from Kunming to Thailand (IF available..??) will not be cheap either so would work out similar price to direct flight to Myanmar (pretty sure that China Eastern flight goes from Kunming to Mandalay, not to Yangon). I looked at doing this route early this year, in the other direction, and it was cheaper to travel Airasia Yangon-Bangkok, then by land thru northern Laos into Yunnan...if you don't mind how long it takes then that is your cheapest way....otherwise just fly there from Kunming.5
If that is true then for sure it is your best bet....when I enquired last year I was told something like $300+ for Mandalay to Kunming (for Feb 2012)...which seems the standard price on their website for 1 way for that route. Looks like it might depend a lot on the season...the website has lowest price for Feb 2013 at nearly $400 one way, yet for $125-ish for October....11
Airasia from Yangon to Kuala Lumpur, then KL to Kolkatta would be a cheap option (Airasia used to fly KL to Dhaka but not any more)12
does anyone know a cheap airline to either Dhaka or somewhere in eastern India that would fly from Yangon.Air India has some flights from Yangon to Kolkata but they aren't cheap nor daily.
You can take Air Asia from Yangon to Bangkok and from Bangkok to Kolkata.
If you want to fly to Dhaka, an option could be to fly from Yangon to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia and from Kuala Lumpur to Dhaka with United Airlines (the Bangladeshi airline with that name, not the American one).
