Kunming to Yangon

Looking on traveling between southwest China to Yangon. Any help would be much appreciated. Is the air option real expensive? Is it safe and possible to get to Yangon over land?

Appreciate anything.

It is the overland option that will be very expensive. To cross the China/Burma border you must be part of an organized tour group and it requires expensive permits. Check on your air options. If flying to Yangon from Kunming is expensive, look at flying to Bangkok and taking a cheap AIr Asia flight from there.

I know an Australian couple trying to do the so called Burma Road around 2004 to 2005. They visited the Myanmar embassy in Canberra and got their visa for Myanmar. They travelled to Kunming and arranged all the paper work with Chinese authorities for travelling the Burma Road. Arriving at the border post everything was alright at the Chinese border post but the Myanmar border post refused entrance to Myanmar. The reason given was that they should have applied for visa for Myanmar in Kunming instead of Canberra. This is delicate paperwork which can fail on the smallest details. I have no idea if it´s possible to travel this way today!

forget doing it by land...by air is expensive...as above mentioned, you could try flying Kunming to Bangkok then Airasia, but international flight from Kunming to Thailand (IF available..??) will not be cheap either so would work out similar price to direct flight to Myanmar (pretty sure that China Eastern flight goes from Kunming to Mandalay, not to Yangon). I looked at doing this route early this year, in the other direction, and it was cheaper to travel Airasia Yangon-Bangkok, then by land thru northern Laos into Yunnan...if you don't mind how long it takes then that is your cheapest way....otherwise just fly there from Kunming.

China Eastern Airlines fly from Kunming to Yangon or Mandalay.
A round trip ticket is around US$250 with taxes and fees included.
You may check it out at its website: ceair.com
I recently got a round trip ticket for traveling in October at the above mentioned price.

If that is true then for sure it is your best bet....when I enquired last year I was told something like $300+ for Mandalay to Kunming (for Feb 2012)...which seems the standard price on their website for 1 way for that route. Looks like it might depend a lot on the season...the website has lowest price for Feb 2013 at nearly $400 one way, yet for $125-ish for October....

I had heard (can't remember where) that a VOA is available if you fly in from Kunming (similar to that available with MAI from Siem Reap)
Maybe worth checking with China Eastern?

You can only get a VOA when flying on MAI - no other airlines.

Air China has also direct flights from Kunming to Yangon. Depending on your travel dates, it could be cheaper than China Eastern if you are looking for a return ticket.

P.S.: Thai Airways is the only direct option from Kunming to Bangkok (AFAIK).

One more question: does anyone know a cheap airline to either Dhaka or somewhere in eastern India that would fly from Yangon.
Big ups ya'll.

Airasia from Yangon to Kuala Lumpur, then KL to Kolkatta would be a cheap option (Airasia used to fly KL to Dhaka but not any more)

Air India has some flights from Yangon to Kolkata but they aren't cheap nor daily.
You can take Air Asia from Yangon to Bangkok and from Bangkok to Kolkata.
If you want to fly to Dhaka, an option could be to fly from Yangon to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia and from Kuala Lumpur to Dhaka with United Airlines (the Bangladeshi airline with that name, not the American one).

I forgot to say that BIMAN was planning to start a direct route from Yangon to Dhaka. AFAIK, they didn't start it yet nor it's known when are they going to start it but you could stay tunned to see if that route is available on your travel dates.
