Try a charity shop in Reykjavik, you may be able to pick up a genuine used Icelandic sweater a little cheaper than those knitted to sell to tourists with bulging wallets. I seem to remember seeing one or two around the city.2
I recommend the Icelandic Handknitting Association shop on Skólavörðustígur 19, just down the road from Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral, it has a huge range and you buy from the people who knit them, rather than a tourist shop with mark-ups. I bought one there in May this year for a very reasonable price given the work that goes into them and am very happy with it (although I don't get much wear out of it in Australia !!).3
if you want the cheapest possible one, buy wool and a pattern and make it yourself (or ask your favorite knitter if they're willing). It's SO much cheaper to buy the raw material, and they are pretty easy and fun to knit in my experience. The raw materials for one sweater costs about 3000-4000isk depending on your size.the icelandic hand knitting association is a great place to get materials, and if you're able to go out of town a little bit, the shop at Álafoss in Mossfellsbaer is also great.
