Ponte Vedra to Miami - places to stop off/route to take
We are leaving Ponte Vedra on a Monday (late morning/early afternoon) and have to be down in Miami by lunchtime on the Friday. That gives us 3 nights to do the trip at a leisurely pace. How would you suggest we broke the journey up? Any areas to particularly aim for? Palm Coast? Melbourne? W Palm beach? Without input from those who know the areas they're just names on a map to us. We don't need to be in "party" resorts or anywhere too exclusive and expensive. Somewhere we can get a room for around the $100 mark with a few restaurants/bars in walking distance, preferably not just by the side of the interstate. Happy to head in land a little if worth it, we don't need to be right on the coast the whole way down. We're not planning on doing orlando or the theme parks. Many thanks

To be honest we wont want to actually "do" much at all. Its the last 3 days of a 2 1/2 week trip so it'll be more about heading back to the starting point to get the flight home. I was just after some pointers on a pleasant place to stop off late afternoon each day to look for a motel, have a stroll around, grab a beer or two then a bite to eat. Wont be looking to do much more than that,5
Taking 3 nights for a 6 hour drive and not wanting to do anything seems like a waste of time to me. I'd suggest cutting a day from the trip (reapply it elsewhere, maybe a trip to xKey Largo from xMiami, or something).I guess a stop in Melbourne or nearby would do. Most of the communities along that stretch aren't really that different from one wanother, but Melbourne at least has a university.

Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Deerfield Beach, Laudedale-by-the-Sea, and Fort Lauderdale all have pleasant beach side areas with a range of restaurants and bars. I'm not sure what hotel prices are like, however. Alternatively, downtown Fort Lauderdale (Tarpon Bend "party" district through to Las Olas Blvd) is a proper city centre with many options.7
St. Augustine, oldest city on the East Coast.Adds driving time, but with 3 days, why not swing over to Tampa and then tour the Everglades en route to Miami?

Thanks chaps. We're doing Key Largo, Everglades and Naples area at the beginning of the trip but it seems the general feeling is 3 days down the east coast is too long. Prehaps we should just stop one night on the way back down and spend last two nights further south. I'd just imagined Miami/south beach would be an expensive hassle with the rental car.9

For xSouth Beach, yes. For the rest of xMiami and xMiami Beach (which is not xMiami), a car helps immensely.

Why the hell are you even going to Florida so long? Its a one trick pony. Fly to New Orleans 2 nights.ADVERTISEMENT
