"Hey Paul, what's the difference between a country boat and the houseboat? "Firstly the size, Houseboats have bedrooms, loungeroom, bathrooms, etc,
Country Boat is similar to the Kashmiri Shikara,
They are about 2 to 3 times bigger than the size of the average canoe, they usually have a thatched roof,

I'm from kollam... There are two ways you can make a backwater trip. Either in a private houseboat or in a government public water transport system. One month back I made a backwater trip from Kollam to Karunagappally and it costs me 6000 rupees for four people including food. The duration was about 6 hours. If you have budget you can make it from Kollam to Aleppey and that would be nice.. You can also have an overnight stay in the boat if you want to..If you choose the public transport system, it costs you about 100-150 rupees from Kollam to Aleppey. But both are very different. If you want to be in your comfort zone, u need to go for a houseboat. If you want to taste what kerala is really like, go for the second one..
