Thanks, maesania and ref_traveler. It's good to get restaurant tips from people without an agenda, like yourselves.

Check out Good Food in Mexico City: Food Stalls, Fondas and Fine Dining by Nicholas Gilman. This edition was published last December. You can also get an electronic version for your Kindle for $3.

I have the first edition from 2008. Sadly I have not been to Mexico City since then to use the book but it will be on the top of my packing list when I do go.

Thanks SO much everyone. Chowhound is a great site, new to me and the discussions about Mexican restaurants I have copied to take with me. Also,I found Nicholas Gilman's blog "goodfoodmexicocity.blogspot.com". Uh,WOW! Terrific site with photos of restaurants, plated meals, extensive reviews of the meals and great writing style. If I were moving to Mexico City or staying there a long time I would buy his book in heartbeat and eat my way across town using him as a guide. If only it were so. (And no, am not this guy and I don't know him.) Check out his blog and you'll see what I mean.

Anonimo, I saw your recommendations on chowhounds...nice to see a familiar name on there. Good recommendations on there I think too. THanks for all the advice here...I see some patterns of recommendations from all these sources (deleting the Tripadvisor input mostly)that I am going to follow.

THanks so much for not just responding "hit the search feature".....

Anyone wanting more info should really check out those two sites: chowhound and goodfoodinmexicocityblog.......terrific! I have now been able to get a much better handle on where I want to eat and the Tripadvisor results mostly don't gibe with what I have found as I dug into the subject. And I know from my area (Guatemala) that local's suggestions carry way more weight than tourist's because local's favs. generally are the best. Tourists are limited in time and # of meals they can eat. In Mexico City I will be a tourist.....

Thanks everyone!

My new fave vegetarian food in the Centro is the Hare Krisna place on Allende, 3 blocks north of the metro. Though the other two spots already mentioned are good, and have that weird piano music..
