Banks give the best rate. Simply atm it.

Like going gambling; Only carry enough cash on you, that you can aford to lose.

My www.ricksteves.com money belt saved all, including passport, 3 times that I KNOW of.

Washable. Holds passport too/

You only need your passport handy, to change hotels and planes.

Not everybody gets robbed. But it sure is a humbling inconvenience. Takes hassle to get cards canx and replaced.

At table, put your valuables under the center of the table. When pack is on the ground, put a leg through a strap.

You're dealing with pros, who can spot a naíve newby a block away.

Thank you for your advice. I will take cautious as what you suggested. By the way, do you know the rate for Euro from Canadian $ in Barcelona today ( Friday Sept 14 ) ?

Hi.

Today (15th Sept.).... $CAN1 = between €0.70 and €0.80c.
Keep clear of change booths around La Rambla (Las Ramblas) and other tourist hot spots.
The rates are always poorer.

Spot on mate. Can't say I spent 2 years in South America but it was certainly longer than I spent in Barcelona. Ha ha.

In my 45 years of travel, shippin', wandering and working arond oz, and criuses with mom and sibs,
I've only been robbed in any way,
about six times.

My folks and neighbors in Houston have a much worse record.

Not that I'm saying Barcelona is dodgy in any way, just don't do what I did and wander around pi^^ed late at night

Ha (shouldn't laugh - sorry) ! !
I'm so lucky I've not been robbed, as I've shared the same experiences in many cities late at night.
It's all the beer and John Daniel's fault.... Not mine.

Hey mate, laugh away, it is funny to be fair. Two days on the trot! Ha ha. What happened was me and a friend spent two days in Barcelona, saw the sights, getting drunk etc. We then got the bus to Zaragoza staying with the family of a Spanish couple who lived in Liverpool for a while. Saw the sights, went out and got drunk (Again) whith their Spanish friends. Then we went back to Barcelona for another 2 nights. Now the second time back in Barcelona we had been a bit tipsy for 4 nights on the trot before. Now by this point I was tired, we weren't drunken messes or anything but I let my guard down. Got dipped twice. No violence, spilt paint on me or anything. I was daft. Wasn't bothered about the money, wasn't bothered about the phone (Which was a hand me down from someone who upgraded). Was just gutted about the wallet which my recently deceased mother bought me in Italy. I hated myself for that. Still, we live and learn. Never happened since anywhere in the world.

All great memories of me and my drunken furores, till I read your last two lines. That hurts - that really hurts.

Sorry mate, didn't mean to put a downer on things. It does make you think about whats important though. The money, well, my mate lent me some, the phone, another mate who was upgrading when I got home gave me his old one. The wallet, now that I can't replace. It wasn't even expensive. The person who nicked it probably just chucked it in a drain. Its all good though, the things I learned on those couple of days seem to have kept me safe everywhere else I've been.

To be honest, at the end of the day, it usually comes to gaining or losing the equivalent of a cup of coffee.
