Uhuru Expeditions (uhuruexpeditions.com) - Be carefull

Hello,

I just arrived from Tanzania where I climbed the Kilimanjaro and did a 11 days safari. I choose Tunzo from Uhuru expeditions to arrange my trip. Everything went well until the second day of the safari. Our guide had not received enough money from Andrew (the brother of Tunzo who takes care of the business in Tanzania, Tunzo being in England most of the time) for the entrances in the parks. We had to find a way to pay the entrances fee by ourselves. The entrance in Tarangire was easy to arrange (Visa) but it was a different story for Ngorongoro. At this point, Andrew refused to speak to us over the phone. He would speak only to our guide.
In the end, Tunzo paid back everything he owed us. Andrew never showed up to explain his behavior.

Tunzo said it was all Andrew’s fault and even tried to act as if he did not know we had experienced this problem (even though our guide had spoken with him many times to try to get the money during the safari). On the other side, Andrew would tell our guide that Tunzo did not transfer enough money.
In short, a big mess.

According to what I heard, this kind of money problem happens often with this organization.
If I had to do it again, I would choose another agency.

This is how people can write and express their complains. Everything should be open. Always try to be honest and explain what happened without gassing. Nobody has a right to spoil somebody's business while you have received what is in a contract. The delay of 9 minutes you put people or the Tour Company in a forum no way. Sometimes in big city like Nairobi, Cairo, Jo berg etc you can't avoid traffic jam. It is time for Tunzo to apologize.

I was very sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the service you received from Uhuru Expeditions. I am upset that your guide did not receive enough money from our team to pay for the park fees in Tarangire and Ngorongoro, and that Andrew did not speak directly to you about this problem. I know that trips like this are very expensive and that it is very important that clients enjoy themselves and have a quality experience. I can understand that you were very upset to experience these problems.

To try to deal with the problem, I met with you and tried to understand what had gone wrong. I believe that my team in Tanzania were late in transferring the park entrance fees on to the card held by your guide. Unfortunately in Tanzania, these transfers have to be activated in person by bank staff and sometimes this can take longer than we anticipate. When I met with you, I refunded all the monies this had cost you and I apologised in person.

I will not let this happen again and will be sure that all park fee transfers are completed with 48 hours to spare, so that clients do not experience similar problems. I have also instructed Andrew that he must always talk to any clients wishing to discuss any issues they are experiencing with him.

I appreciate your feedback and the lesson that we are able to learn from this. I can only apologise once again for all the inconvenience and worry that you experienced.

With respect, Tunzo (Uhuru Expeditions Team Leader)

I am very sorry to hear that the service you received had its problems but I think this was a one off incident. The service I received from Tunzo and his company couldn't have been better! Tunzo and his team were extremely professional; making sure that all 7 of us made it to the top of Kilimanjaro and the safari and Zanzibar trip we went on afterwards was absolutely spectacular.

I'm a student and went with 6 other students to Tanzania. As none of the group had much money we relied heavily on Tunzo and his company to make sure everything that was planned ran smoothly without any problems, this is exactly what happened. From the moment we arrived in Tanzania we were met by someone at the airport to personally escort us to Moshi to begin the climb. This type of professionalism remained throughout the trip: we had our own driver on the safari which ran without any problems as well as our own personal chauffeur whilst on the island of Zanzibar. Each of them had a phone handy to contact a member of the Uhuru team in case we encountered any problems.

Fortunately we had no problems whatsoever, the trip fantastic and one that none of us will ever forget. It's a shame that your trip was spoilt by the safari incident but I'm sure the rest of your trip (especially the Kilimanjaro climb) was a brilliant experience. I would only recommend Tunzo and his company to others looking to visit the picturesque and breathtaking country that is Tanzania.

Melisa,
I'm sorry t o hear that you had a bad experience. My wife and I went on Safari with Uhuru, and we did not experience any problems like these. Everything was handled very professionally by the whole crew.

It's unfortunate that you had this issue but I second what other people have said about Tunzo and Uhuru Expeditions. I just got back from a Kili trek and safari organized by Uhuru Expeditions and I thought they were great - I couldn't have asked for a better company, guides or friends. Tunzo is very honest and his crew works very hard to ensure that everyone has a great experience. Our safari was outsourced to another company and the lodges were beautiful and we had no trouble with park fees or lodge fees being unpaid, though there was a slight delay in payment processing at one of the lodges - hard to tell whose fault that was - Tunzo's or the lodge's - but it got worked out in about 5 minutes so it was really not a big deal and we had a great time.

I do think that delays in developing countries are something you sometimes just have to roll with, especially in Africa where things can inexplicably take 10 times longer than they would in the West. ("No hurry in Africa!") Ultimately it sounds like everything got worked out and you had a good trip overall. I can't recommend Uhuru Expeditions and Tunzo highly enough as a budget-midrange operator.
