Souvenir for my wife

I am traveling to Japan for business near the end of this month. I will be in the greater Nagoya area for work and have a good portion of a day in Kyoto for tourist stuff. My schedule is full with the exception of the Kyoto portion so I will not have much time to walk around shops and ponder gift ideas. My wife is not too thrilled with me going on this trip due to some bad timing. So, I would like to get her a make-up souvenir/gift. She is not very big on trinkets or nick-knacks. So I am looking for some recommendation on a gift that is uniquely Japanese, appealing to 30 year old woman (this is anonymous right?), and also some-how functional. Have I made this an impossible task with restrictions yet? Clothing, art, jewelry, etc (though not too $$$) would be great if anyone has a recommendation for something in this category that is unique to Japan. Just FYI, she is a little conservative and would not wear a traditional Kimono or the like, at least not in public.
Any ideas welcome and appreciated!

if she likes pottery, you could find some very expensive Japanese tea cups that might go down well.

One of the prettiest items my father bought my mother in his travels was a Japanese jade/gold bracelet.

If you're really in trouble, how about a good handbag made of quality kimono cloth? Name brands like Okajima can run upwards of 100000 yen (US$1200), but there are cheaper brands that I've seen sold for 10000-20000 yen. In Nagoya I've seen cheap ones (chirimen cloth outside, nylon interior for about 4000 yen, though I wouldn't recommend that for your situation.

I appreciate the responses. These are definitely some good ideas and will help to narrow my search. Thanks again for the suggestions. I still have some time before my trip. So I will keep checking for any new posts as well.

My wife bought beautiful kimonos at a used Kimono shop and hairclips & pearls for herself and as gifts. She also bought a wrist watch with Japanese numbers instead of Arabic.

Uniquely Japanese....

Personally I would avoid traditional fabric things. One reason is that to western eyes they tend to look less expensive than they actually are. Also depending on her skin tone, the colours may not necessarily flatter. I would probably go for ceramics or pottery, pearls could be another reasonable option - though they are probably sold at inflated prices in Kyoto.
