seeking some advice on Azerbaijan

Hi everybody,

I will be travelling to Azerbaijan (Baku) in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on a few things.

safety - we will be two female travellers. My understanding is there are no major safety concerns (assuming one observes the usual travel safety precautions) but can anybody just confirm this? Is there anything particular we should be aware of in this respect?

trips - since we will be based in Baku the whole time (six nights), we are planning only day trips from there. Is Lahic or Quba reachable by public transport on a day trip? We would like to do maybe a short hike/see some mountain scenery, and have heard these would be good places to go to.

money - does anybody know what would be the usual price for a taxi ride from the airport to the centre at night (for a Russian speaking tourist)? The same question for Qobustan by taxi (by day:)?

Thanks for any information, will be appreciated.

Hi There

Baku is a very safe city, I used to go out around midnight, and come back 1 am or 2 sometimes, but my hotel is in the historical city, but over all i never felt unsafe.

Lahic, as fluffy said you should take to someplace called Ismaily, then change by a taxi to Lahic, but the city is very small, one main street with small ones, but it is nice, as it is famous for the Copper industry and its beautiful houses as well.

Quba's buses leave every hour from Avtavgazal bus station, costs 10 Manat.but nothing in particular there, except for the Mosque with its beautiful dome and the pencil shape minaret, the real scene lies behind Quba, Xinaliq and Laza.

Xinaliq is really interesting, amazing view as it a village built on 2100 meters high on top of the mountain, the way to get there is also a trip itself. if you take the Marshrutka costs 5 Manat maximum, but taxi, that's what I did costed 10 per person, we were two, but it is faster.

Laza is only reachable from Qubstan, public buses is very difficult to find, it is easier to take a taxi, also costed 20 round with two hours of waiting.Laza has an amazing scenery, lots of Water-Falls, an amazing village, green and clean, nice guys overthere, people are very nice.

Also you should consider Sheki, really nice to visit if you are looking for the Islamic architecture, beautiful house for someone called Khan, beautiful colors.Don't forget to have a stay in Caravan Saray, a house built 400 years ago and recently renovated and now is a hotel, night almost cost 25 to 35 Manat per night in DBL room, no breakfast.

Taxi to the city, we paid 20 Manat when we took it from the city and it was at Down, around 6 am.

Quobstan we also took a taxi, we had no time, we saw only the petroglyphies we spent half a day there and it costed 35 Manat, going and back including two hours waiting.

I just come back from Azerbaijan, so the info is a bit fresh, was in August there.

safe trip
Ahmed
