best drive?

Hi all

we will be driving from Plitvice Lakes to Rovinj is a few weeks and I am trying to work out the most scenic route! Google maps throw up three different options - one through Karlovac, one more inland through Ogulin and one via the coast road through Sanj. Any suggestions on which one to take?
thanks Polly

The coastal route via Senj is the most scenic. Continue down the coast road to Barban before turning inland towards Rovinj via Zminj. This route is spectacular when compared with going through the Ucka Tunnel.

would agree - via Senj. Karlovac is - well distinctly unattractive let's say.

Definitely the most scenic. Keep in mind that the road is all hairpin turns all the way down to Senj. The driver will have no time but to glance the spectacular scenery (there a one or two spots to park the car on the side of the road and marvel). This is one of the two main roads built by Napoleon - asphalted since :) - during french brief rule over that part of the world.

Examine the line: Plitvice - Otočac - Kuterevo (orphan bear refuge) - Krasno - ( excellent cheese manufacture ) - Oltari - (divert eventually to North Velebit National park and the famous Zavizan mountain hut and Botanical garden ) - Sveti Juraj - Senj -Rovinj.

Hi Polly,

I have just got back from Croatia and we did Rovinj to Plitvice lakes. We went via Senj and it was beautiful. We stopped at Senj because it was so pretty. If you want an adventure (I mean a single track road with stones all over the place and landmine signs at the side of the road,) google maps can direct you onto an 'unknown road' via Bobici and Mala Kapela I think, which is what it did with us. I would say if you're driving at night it's not such a great idea (it was scary at the time) but maybe if you have a good car, and it's daylight then it might be quite pretty. (I don't know as it was dark when we went through it) If you're not feeling like an adventure then avoid the unknown roads on google maps! :)
