Travel in Laos

Hey everyone,

I have a few questions regarding our upcoming trip to Loas:

1) Is it ok to book plane tickets online under www.laoairlines.com, i.e. they will have seats for us etc.?

2) We have 16 days in Laos (wish it was more!) and our itinerary is as follows: Luang Namtha -> Udomxai (just a stopover for one night) -> LP -> VV -> VT. Does this sound do-able?

3) Do you have recommendations for all those places? Also on how long we should spend in each place? While we're not interested in the party scene in VV, we heard that it's very nice place with beautiful scenery.

Any help would be appreciated! :)

Happy travels!

Thats the official web site for Lao Airlines. Unless they have seat availability, they wont sell tickets.

16 days for your itinerary seems doable. Since no one on this board knows what your interests are, it's pretty hard to comment on what to do and how long to do it. Suggest you grab a guidebook and do some homework.

Thanks! My question re the airline was more whether their online service is reliable - I don't want to pay and then end up with no seat. :) My interests really vary! I think we want to do some hiking, experience the culture, food and just generally the vibe of Laos. I am also pretty keen to see the countryside around VV as it looks amazing! I have done some research using the LP but it's always good getting some personal recommendations..

Personally - we enjoyed Muang La, Luang Prabang (really excellent), Vientiane and Champassak Province (including Pakse and the Mekong valley, south to Cambodia). Van Vieng - yeah - nice limestone karst scenery - but otherwise worth a BIG miss!

Personal opinion only. Read up on proposed destinations - you'll quickly enough pick up the underlying messages.

There are frequently no seats on Lao Airlines - the passengers are required to stand.
For heavens sake, Lao Air is a good regional airline, far better than Jetstar.

I don't know who some people feel like they need to be sarcastic on this forum. Thanks for the help obione980! Unfortunately we will not be able to go further south than Vientiane..

"I don't know who some people feel like they need to be sarcastic on this forum."

I don't know why people feel the need to think that they are coming to some backward hick country with no infrastructure whatsoever when they ask questions about Lao.

Well your post reads as if Lao airlines is like Aeroflot in its bad days. Had you done a modicum of research you would have found out that it is a good regional airline. I was serious in that it is far better than your own Australian. Jetstar.

I have used Lao Airlines seveal times, booking directly at their offices and once thru' a travel agent in LP.. Each time I have found them to be fine and gently polite in that charming Lao way.
VTEboy - good to see you back and on form - hope to see you in the New Year.
Tut tut why would anyone ever think of you as being sarcastic?

Awesome! What about the places we plan to visit? I know they are the more touristy places but I guess they might be for a reason? Could anyone recommend things to do there (we are up to pretty much anything) and where to stay etc.?

Oudomxai is the sort of place you just pass through to get somewhere else. Anything else can be found out via the search box at the top right.
