How much cash can I take into Egypt & getting Visa?

Hi,

We are leaving for Egypt on Thursday and I was hoping to obtain some knowledge or feedback regarding the amount of money that can be taken into Egypt.
I noticed on the Australian governments smart traveller website that only 5,000 egyption pounds can be taken to or from Egypt, which is the equivalent of $800 AUD. However we are moving onto Greece after a week and I have $750 EURO, in cash on me to cover our accommodation and expenses in Europe (which I don't want to bank and lose money due to currency exchange, when I will need EURO's anyway) as well as the cash I need to pay for our accommodation in Egypt. All this cash is in excess of the $800 allowed :( But I have also read that there are excess charges when paying by card, and I am on a very tight budget.
What happens if I take more than the 5,000 Egyption pound allowance? I heard that you have to pay taxes? It seems like a very unreasonable restriction. Surely other people have struggled with this in the past, I just haven't been able to find any forums or further information about it.
Also, I will be obtaining my Visa at the airport once we arrive in Egypt, can anyone recommend the best place to go to get it, as I have heard there are some dodgy people about trying to offer Visa's for much higher than the actual price it costs.
Hope someone could provide some guidance.
Cheers,
Kathy

There are ATMs in Egypt - in every large city at the very least, and they're easy to find.
When getting your visa, follow the signs to the desk; don't give your passport to someone walking around who will offer to get it for you faster (at a fee).

I think the limit on bringing in money only applies to Egyptian currency.

hi lexicola,
I read ur topic and i hope i can help u
I am Tamer and I am Egyptian, I'll answer u about any question going on in the mind :)
first lit me comment on ur words

but I have also read that there are excess charges when paying by card, and I am on a very tight budget.
there is no excess charges will be added to ur chick or bill anywhere u will use it.

unfortunately, Taxi drivers here usually exploit the tourists as they rise the fare on them, as the tourists surely don't know how much they have to pay especially that taxis here is more cheaper than Europe for example. so take care when u deal with them try to negotiate with them to pay lower pounds for example if one tilling u that u have to pay 20 LE say to him only 10 LE :D

you will get it in the airport and i think it will cost about 400 egyptian pound and its a fixed cost. but I'll ask ma friend that is working in this field. ATTENTION: Don't give your papers or any money unidentified person.

Fist u have to know that AUD 800 is the equivalent of 4880 Egyptian Pound.
second when we talking about is the 4880 pound is enough or not, you have to specify you destination in Egypt. its very important! cuz the cost will vary from one place to another and i think that Sharm El-Shikh (which is my best destination in egypt) is the most expensive city in Egypt. so first tell me where you intend to visit in egypt and I'll answer this question.(but the amoount will be enough in many places but u will need the help of one of the residents ( as I told u that there are alot of Exploiters u may meet one of them).

i hope i could help u
u can talk to me any time

Just to clarify solo2_2's point regarding the tourist visa; it costs $15 (approx 91le) but has to be paid for in a hard currency.

Maybe too late for the information to be useful now, but i can confirm what Voyager 2002 says above: this limit of 5000LE applies to Egyptian currency only.

The Egyptian authorities would be only too pleased for you to bring in, and spend, loads more than that in hard currency!

The Visa for Egypt is virtually a stamp you buy for US$15 from a bank teller at a bank kiosk which already on your way to the right side just before you reach the passport control...You need not to ask anyone you will be fine.
Simple rule for Taxi rate you calculate like this 10 LE + 1.5 LE / minute that will make for the heavy traffic of Cairo and Alex. and some extra a foreigner is expected to pay ie for a 15 minutes ride you pay 30 LE. or so ,still very cheap in comparison
