Samosir island is full of Christian Bataks; might be refreshing after slogging around in Muslim Aceh. (alcohol OK).
The vistas are impressive, but the wildlife is gone.

I remember in 1977, it was difficult to sleep from all the splashes the big fish made at night, and baby fish nibbled on you as you were swimming.

Sadly, all the fish are basically gone now, at least not jumping like before..

If you want go to Tangkahan, you can go with a Semesta Bus in the terminal of Pinang Baris. departure schedule is erratic, which is at 8 o'clock and 11 o'clock. you can't arrive in tangkahan with this bus. But the bus will stop at the intersection robert, where there are motorcycle taxis can be hired for the Tangkahan. the journey from field to the intersection robert about 4 hours at a cost of about 15ribu rupiah, and the journey from the intersection robert to Tangkahan about half an hour at a cost of about 50ribu rupiah. The road to Tangkahan very rarely broken so there is no transport to get there. But if you choose Tangkahan as a vacation spot you, it is the right choice. Andrewguide is it possible for me to get a 4-wd to take me from Medan to Tangkahan and back? How can I arrange this? Cost?

Is the weather better at the end of October or the end of March?

Yes you can go to Tangkahan with 4-wd. But you must booking the car before u go to Tangkahan. You can get the car in travel or maybe i can search the car if you want.

if you know anyone in Medan you can be easier to manage, and the price for booking the car about 700-800rupiah to Tangkahan-Medan and Medan-Tangkahan. But if you want go with the bus, you can go with Semesta Bus from Pinang Baris Terminal and the price is 15ribu rupiah, and continue from simpang robert to tangkahan with "ojek/cycles" and the price around 80ribu-100ribu rupiah.

The weather in Sumatera is uncertain. You can go whenever you want, in July or October also good.
