Opinions on must see eastern European cities.

Hi,

I have set aside 3 months to travel eastern Europe and I'm trying to plan a rough itinerary. Im after some eastern european citites that often get forgotten about also to get as much information from your past eperiences as well. Share some of your travels, pros and cons, must see's and must not's. If you travelled somewhere that you thought was over-rated or you absolutely loved somewhere, write a reply. I'm after as much information as so please guys share your stories.

Thanks,

Willi.

Heh, "must see" cities and "forgotten about" cities are almost mutually exclusive.

For example, I'd describe Prague, Budapest, Dubrovnic, Sarajevo, Krakow, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius all as "must-see" cities, but they are all very well-known and well-travelled cities.

There's plenty of great destinations that are overlooked by most travellers, though. Wroclow has got plenty to see and do, but doesn't get huge numbers of visitors. Pecs, in Hungary, too. Well worth going to, but I'm not sure I'd describe them as "must-see".

Your best bet to see the must see and the forgotten places is to concentrate on a single country or small region. See the Capitol or largest cities and visit the countryside between places and the national parks.

Do you have 6 weeks or three month?

Where are you starting and where do you need to return?

When are you traveling?

What are your interests? Nature, history, architecture, nightlife, food, etc......

Answer those questions and I'll be happy to make more constructive suggestions.

Must sees in Central Europe - Gdansk, Torun, Poznan, Wroclaw. Torun and Poznan are less crowded by tourists.
Unknown destination but must see - Lublin city.

If you will visit Tallinn do side trip to Sillamäe - pearl of Soviet architecture and Narva castle.

Travelled already a bit in eastern europe...
Well my top 3:
Vilnius - Prague -Krakow

Prague: Have a love/hate feeling with this city(travelled already 31x to czech republic, cause I studied there 10 years ago and have still close friends in city pardubice).... It has so nice culture, buildings etc.... but when I see how the masstourism is growing... and english becomes the mainlanguage. Have the same feeling with riga by the way(was there 12 years ago and last year september...what a commercial change.... ).

One of my most surprising cities ever been: Vilnius.... unknown pearl. Before I went there..didn't know what too expect. Not the feeling that u are in a capital but just a metropolition city. And if we speak about culture,buildings,musuems.... everything is in Vilnius!
Last May I visited Krakow: just a cool city: studentlife, museum, history and so short area and a city who have still her identity.... .

Other nice cities I have been: klaipeda(lit),Liepaja(lv),liptovsky Mikulas(svk),Chrudim(cz)

been in Kaunas too... well I must admit what many people say: If you visit first Kaunas, and then Vilnius.... Kaunas is fast forgotten. This was my first idea and on my travels...other globetrotters agreed with that. Been in Kaunas 3 days... bit grey city.

In juin I was in Budapest: good travel, more and more focused on tourism...but I didn't fell in love with the city... Don't know why. But stayed in a great hostel there: wombats...great people there!
