Trans High Atlas in BTTHi,
I am planning a trans High Atlas in mountain bike for mid-September 2012 for about 20-25 days, maybe including some hiking.
My idea is to start from Midelt towards the Jaffar Cirque in direction to the west and finishing in Marrakech. If there is time left I would like to ride to the Draa Valley towards Zagora and Iriki.
I have just started with the project, I am visiting websites, looking for maps. I am travelling alone because to the impossibility of finding any friend available, but I would like to contact people that have same plans.
I am also looking for GPS waypoints and/or routes for idilic paths you have been to.
I am 43, male, several times in Morocco and the High Atlas by car, 4x4 and hiking. This time I would like to cover more of these beautiful mountains.

1There have been several instances of attempted banditry at the western end of the cirque de jaffar, probably all involving the same males. Read more here. Things may well have changed since then, so this is a heads up, nothing more.
Best map is Reise Know How which is plasticised and tear and water proof.
Chris Scott's Morocco Overland has quite a few pistes in southern Morocco.

3Hamalau sounds like a great concept in the planning. Definitely lots of info on the high atlas there on the net. I can provide references if needed, such as where to store your bike box. Weather good in Sept - I am in Delhi now and plan to be in Marrakech first two weeks Oct and will be up in the Atlas on my bike then. Tires! Tubeless thoorns a potential problem.

Thanks for writing. I have tubes. You are right, there is a lot of information. My problem right now is to fix the route, there are too many possibilities, maybe I fix it during the trip.
My worries are about the water and to have as much as GPS waypoints recorded at my basic Garmin. Does someone know how to extract a GPS coordenates from GoogleMaps?
India, nice country. Enjoy!

7What's your basic Garmin unit?
Do you have Garmin Mapsource, Garmin BaseCamp or similar software bundled with the unit?
You can download the latest version of Mapsource (route planning software) from http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 but you need to have access rights to use it. If you do so, you could then download the free Olaf maps for Morocco from http://www.island-olaf.de/travel/marokko/gps.html
If that doesn't work, try planning a route using Google Earth from which you can extract coordinates.

I have a eTrex one, no maps, just waypoints and routes, enough for me. I have used it for trekkings and driving through the desert in Sahara (Mauritania).
I am trying Google Earth for that matter. I would like to have some waypoints like towns, villages, mountains, water points, etc before departing.
