solo budget traveler in Portland
Hi I will spend two weeks in Oregon in September. In my past trips, I could always meet interesting people in hostel or day trips. But I kinda get the impression that US is more suitable for people travelling in group based on the lack of hostels. Any tip where would be good places to meet other travelers? Thanks1
I can certainly recommend the HI Northwest Hostel in Portland - it was extremely pleasant and more like a B&B in some lovely late 19thC buildings. There is another HI Hostel located in Hawthorne Portland, that might be more social, but I don't know for sure.Noticeboards might find you a car-share trip up the Columbia River Gorge as far as Hood River.

I've stayed at both the Hostels in Portland and they can be socialable, though when I stayed it was more americans than international visitors.Your profile says your a Kiwi. You could check out this website, which is a meetup group of Aussies and Kiwis in Portland. http://www.meetup.com/Kiwis-and-Aussies-in-Portland.
Couchsurfing groups in many cities also have meet-n-greets, group events, etc for locals and travellers alike. Check out the Porttand Couchsurfing group
You can also hangout in the travel section at Powells Bookstore

Hash House Harrier groups in Oregon including Portland. If you run or at least walk quickly, and maybe drink beer (the beer part isn't obligatory). These groups began in Malaysia in the 1930s. There are a few in New Zealand,. There are often visitors as well as locals. I think the "Hump Hash" (runs on Wednesday evenings in Portland, often accessible by public transportation) is the biggest.
