A suitable car for travelling

I am considering purchasing a car for the Memsahib so that we can travel in Australia.

The Hyundai i30 looks pretty good. Has anybody had personal experience of it? Olsem the Kia Cerato, which doesn't seem to be quite as well endowed a vehicle.

I have no experience of it but agree it looks OK. I'd consider the oil burner version.
Friends have the (substantially more expensive) ix35 and love it.
My SWMBO has had a Hyundai Getz for almost 10 years without so much as a blown light globe. A basic but very reliable car.

I reluctantly have a nice Datsun 180B two door hardtop coupe for sale. Showroom condition. Fully lowered all round, mags, extractors, twin foxtail droopies with full dash instrumentation and that's just for starters. Was owned by the little old lady next door who's had it since new. Which is nice.

Ah! We too once had a Datsun 180B and, bearing in mind what was available in the early 1970s, it was an exceptionally good car until the Memsahib (who was stationary at the time) foolishly came within the trajectory of a drunken cricketer.

The Hyundai Xcel she bought in 1995 has been wonderful, 210k and no problems, so we're pretty happy with Hayundai, but now she seeks something with a few more bells and whistles and the i30 looks good. I'd consider the oil burner option, Colin ( we had one in Europe earlier this year and did Amsterdam to Prague at autobahn speeds on a tankfull) but suspect that in Australia the higher price of diesel fuel would negate the fuel economy of diesel and the $2,000 extra for a noisier engine.

my daughter has an i30 and loves it - actually it is the only 'i' product her geek husband will let her have.

i have a KIA Rio and have been happy with it, for me the biggest problem is the small boot space, guessing the cerato would be slightly bigger.

My piano teacher used to drive into the village in '28 Model A - suspect she'd almost owned it since new and it was in pristine condition....

I have rented a couple of times and the vehicles have been Hyundai i30s - nice car to drive with plenty of oomph. Not sure I'd want to drive it very long distances though, especially if you are out in the never never and need to pass those long road trains. I went out to Roxby Downs last year and had initially arranged a Toyota Corolla but after advice from here changed to a Falcon XR6 - much better choice.

That said, we rented a Kia Cerato and drove all the way from Newcastle to Rockhampton in one day ... the only criticism I would have would have been the lack of cruise control otherwise it was very comfy and we felt neither stiff, tired or sore when we arrived at our destination (after a 17 hour drive!).

Hiya KR. Exactly how do you do 17 hrs and arrive fresh? That's a bloody long drive!!!

I admit my foot was sore from holding it on the accelerator pedal, but otherwise I didn't feel too bad. I had two other people with me and we had a fairly animated conversation for much of the drive, so it didn't seem as long as it actually was.
