Corn Island help pleaseI am planning on returning to Nic this winter. Somewhere between 12/15 and 3/1. I am male, 62, traveling solo. I am primarily traveling to relax, fish, mingle with locals and other travelers.
I would like to get recommendations for a place to stay on both LC and BC. Would like a place on the water or very close to it. Something close to restaurants and watering holes and where I can mingle with others. Someplace where me and my stuff is secure and ok to walk around at night alone ( to and from restaurants / bars ).
Another big consideration is my fishing. I will be using local guides but I also would like to stay at a place close to where I can fish from shore on days when I am not using a guide. Within walking distance hopefully.
Cost is not a big issue. I usually try to find something in the 30-35 max range but have stayed in places @14.00 or 60.00 and been very happy. I live on the hot humid coast of NC so I am used to heat and humidity and can live w/o a/c if there is a breeze and screens for the bugs. Don't know now how long I will be there on the islands but I am thinking 1-2 weeks depending on the fishing and how much fun I am having or bored I get. I didn't visit the CI last time because it seemed like a great place for a couple, not so much for a solo 62 yr old., but as I read more about the islands, the people, and the fishing I have decided to try it.
By the way, I would like a private room or cabin ( preferably ) with a private bath and hot water. I am more willing to share a bath and do without HW than share a room, but open to all suggestions.
One other question. I am planning a trip to fl mid Dec to see my Daughter and family and thought about continuing on to Nic. for Christmas / New Years. Question is how busy are the islands around Christmas / New Years? I was in Costa Rica a few years back at this time and it was crazy busy and more expensive.
Thanks in advance

1There are a couple of options, though maybe not for the price range you are hoping for, especially during Christmas/NY.
On Big Corn, Paraiso Club has cabanas, a nice restaurant and is right on the beach. On the other side of the island is Ike's Place, a small group of cabanas that are a bit more contemporary with hot water and all the amenities, located a quick walk from the water. Actually there are lots of options available...check out RightSide Guide for more info on Big and Little Corn.
If you want to get serious about fishing, look for Randy at Rumble in the Jungle Fishing Lodge. He is based in Bluefields, but that's because he knows that the real fishing isn't around Corn Island. Those guys are bagging massive tarpon and snook up the lagoons and rivers up and down the coast. The Caribbean coast is an angler's paradise with an untold number of monsters hiding in the waterways.
Have a good trip!

2I like to stay at the Sunrise. Short walk to long beach for fishing and right across from the water and Casa Canada. Nice water views, very safe area for walking and close to many restaurants. Rooms start at $35 with private bath w/hot water, AC and TV. I would check it out. Paraiso is right in town and on the beach but is more expensive and I'm not sure how much I would walk around at nite. Search Big Corn Island and it will bring you the newly updated Corn Island website. This has a listing of all hotels on both big and little corn.

4On Little Corn we stayed at Carlito's/Sunrise. Just little bungalows feet from the beach, actually pretty amazing. They do have a unit with a kitchen, perfect to cook up your days catch. Stay for a few nights and talk him down on his prices. The walk through the jungle to the West side of the island is easy enough. We did it every night to belly up at Tranquilo Cafe, also a good place for food or coffee in the morning. We loved our stay on Little Corn and were very upset when we spent a night on Big Corn.
We kind of got talked into spending time on Big Corn and regretted it as soon as we got into a cab. Unfortunately, the island didn't seem to offer much and felt unsafe. We always felt that people were watching us and our fears were confirmed when the grounds keeper at our hotel locked up the front gates at night and carried a sawed off shotgun under his jacket. Maybe we missed something because there are people that like the island. But we were very content spending 5 days on Little Corn and would have been happier if we didn't spend our last night on Big Corn.
