Israel and then another stop.... Sinai or ???

Hello,

I will be traveling to Israel in mid-September and then wanted to go to one other destination. My first choice would be diving in the Sinai in Egypt, but since the situation is a bit unstable I was looking into other options. What are other places to visit from Israel that one can actually get to and that are stable right now?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Are you aware of the holidays? If not, read FAQ 52.

The only other country that has an open land border with Israel is Jordan. Anywhere else involves flying. How far are you prepared to go? One can actually get to hundreds of destinations by flying from Israel. New York, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Paris, London...

Jordan would be a great choice.
You can dive in Aqaba (great diving, although Sinai is more spectacular), visit Petra, camp/hike in Wadi Rum, etc.

I agree with amirico but, other than Aqaba, most Jordanian destinations are not day trips. You should give yourself at least three to four days.

Good luck.

I can't see where the OP asked about day trips. And I read it to mean leaving Israel to go somewhere else, and not returning to Israel.

Yes, we would like to go somewhere in the region. We are coming from NYC, so we would like to not have to travel too far and still see somewhere new. It is just complicated by the complexities of the region....

That's a relief. I'm getting a little tired of answering people who have only just discovered that they won't be able to get from Jerusalem to Eilat by public transport on September 17!

Turkey? Greece? Not knowing where you've already been means we don't know what constitutes new destinations...

Well looking on a map yourself might help :)) - along with an indication of how far is 'not too far' - also is that referring to travel by road or flying ? I believe Sinai is out of bounds now for Israelis due to the deteriorating security situation so yes that's definitely out.

Side trip overland to Jordan via Sheikh Hussain bridge - if your family have a car they can drive you into Jordan through here. Many Israelis drive into Jordan from this point.. and you can exit via the South ( Eilat ) with numerous stops along the way.. Jordan is a very safe country and welcomes everyone.

Alternatively a flight to Cairo or Istanbul may be an option for a short side trip of a few days... but without knowing exactly what you want its difficult to advise..

It seems that only the inland area of Sinai is problematic. The coastal areas are fine. Great diving there and cheaper than heading to Jordan.
