We'd arrive by plane at about 4pm from Beijing on a Sunday afternoon. Too late to get into the park itself, so we'd stay somewhere in Zhangjiajie town. I've found 3: Zhangjiajie Zhongtian International Youth Hostel , Wulingyuan Zhongtian International Youth Hostel & Pipaxi hotel.Any recommendations, & why?
Day 1 (Mon.) we'd aim for the Forest park itself & buy the 2 day entrance ticket. We'll stay 1 night in the park, either at Ding Ding's (looks nicer) or the sister hotel of the Zhongtian YH - which doesn't get great reviews, but it may be convenient for organising transport withe the sister hostel.......
Day 2 Forest park following Xilongge & Drumbrake's notes. Leave forest park in the afternoon & head back to ZZJ city, staying at the same place as the 1st night.
Day 3 looks like our flight is late at night, so does this leave us enough time to go to Tianmen mountain? I really want to do the 7.5km cable car & that glass skywalk.
That's Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Enough time? Coz we can stay another day. We speak Chinese - I notice people posting that this can be useful.
I'd stay near the park entrance on Sunday, rather than Zhangjiajie city, unless you have a specific reason to stay in the city that night. There are quite a few places near the entrance - more choices at Wulingyuan. Then, when in the park I'd stay at Ding Ding or one of the similar places nearby.
I'm not sure about day 3.
If you want to stay in Zhangjiajie City, I stayed at Zhongtian YH and it was fine. It was conveniently located, and the staff were very helpful in terms of answering questions and giving travel advice. Not sure about the park entrance, as I did not stay there.
Within the park, I did pass the YH on the shuttle bus and it did not seem conveniently located. It was a fairly long walk to shuttle bus stop, while most of the buses passing the YH would likely be full and therefore not stop.
On Day 3 you should easily be able to get back from Tianmen mountain by about 5 or 6pm, or even earlier if you start early in the morning.
Three days sounds okay, at a minimum. Enjoy!
I would say that 3 days is sufficient.
Our night flight out of Zhangjiajie to Beijing was delayed. We were bussed to a hotel in Zhangjiajie and put up for a couple of hours then woken and bussed back to the airport. Apparently that is quite commonplace
We fly into ZJJ around 21:30 October 28,spend that night in Zhongtian YH, followed by three nights at (hopefully) the Ding Ding Inn. From this thread and Ding Ding herself we think that the Inn is a 1 minute (purple bus) ride from the top of BaiLong elevator to XiaPing, then a 5 minute walk “along the small road to my home”
The 1 min bus ride must also be a short walk. Can anyone describe more specifically how to walk from the elevator to Ding Ding Inn? What actually is “XiaPing”?
About the elevator: are tourists with backpacks allowed on the elevator? What times of day (Mondays) are best for avoiding crowds?
Should be no problem to take luggage on the elevator I would have thought, although if your luggage is heavy there is a same day freight service for getting it shipped direct from the entrance of the park to the guesthouse, if I recall rightly. I didn't try it though.
Have a great trip!

Pipaxi is very close to the west entrance of Zhangjiajie and not in Zhangjiajie City, so very convenient for an early start to avoid any crowds the next day. It looked nice from the outside.I would say that 3 days is sufficient.

Xia Ping is the name of the village (several roads) in which Ding Ding Inn is located. You reach it from the second intersection from the bus stop, either by short shuttle bus ride or about ten minute walk. Once you get to the intersection, turn right and walk a few hundred meters. The guesthouse is clearly visible on the left.Should be no problem to take luggage on the elevator I would have thought, although if your luggage is heavy there is a same day freight service for getting it shipped direct from the entrance of the park to the guesthouse, if I recall rightly.
