Almaty to Bishkek and surrounding in 8+ days

Hi everyone--thanks for your help in advance.

Three of us will be arriving in Almaty from China on the evening of September 29th and will be returning to China via the Bishkek airport on October 8th. We are looking for itinerary suggestions. We plan to get a single entry Kazakhstan visa so once we enter Kyrgyzstan it will be for good.

Before you say things like Kazakhstan is lame, your time is insufficient, go to Uzbekistan, etc. please understand we all work full time jobs, are limited by holidays/flight schedules, do not wish to travel within China during domestic holidays and have visited many other peripheral countries.

Roughly:

Arrive Almaty Night, September 29
September 30: Stay in City, Big Almaty Lake?
October 1: Tamgaly Petroglyphs (en route to Bishkek)
October 2: Arrive Bishkek
October3:
????? (Al-Archa National Park)
October4-6:
October 7: ______, stay in Bishkek for flight next morning
October 8 (morning) return to China

Any help for some rad nature/hiking or historical sites during or before the question marks is very much appreciated. I am very ignorant of both countries. We probably want 2 nights of Central Asian bars/clubs or whatever it is they do.

Thanks a ton!

First thorntree post,

TreyBien

Hello Treybien.
About Kazachstan I can only suggest to go jnto the mountians near the Medeo skating ring,

I know more about Kyrgyzstan. As you are busy people and have limted time I would suggest to contact a local company that makes a proposal (and price) according to your whishes. In this way you do not waist time, finding out about possible trips and looking for transportation. It is even possible to get an interpreter to travel along if you want.
I would suggest; visit south side of lake Issyk-Kul., hiking and/or horse riding in the mounains, visit Burana tower, and if not already seen, petroglyohes in Cholpon Ata. Back in Bishkek you can make a daytrip to Ala Arcah or Alamedin ( with hot spa) If you send me a private mail I can give more details. I know the country rather well have been there many times

Can anyone compare petroglyphes at Tamgaly to Cholpon Ata? Could one be considered more worthwhile than the other?

Also wondering if there will be any color turning/fall foliage by first week of October in Northern Kyrgyzstan?

I see. Thank you. Wikitravel describes them as on the way to Bishkek. Say we leave Almaty for Tamgaly one day, is it easy to do:

Day 1: Leave Almaty for Tamgaly, See Tamgaly
Day 2: Leave Tamgaly for Bishkek, arrive Bishkek before dinner

Do you have any insight into Almaty-->Tamgaly, Tamgaly-->Bishkek travel times or how much time is needed at Tamgaly?

Thanks very much

TreyBien

Hi,

If you are going to Kyrgystan. You must visit the lake. Its beautiful. You can visit the pethroglyfs of Cholpon Ata and visit the lake.

Bishkek is good for 1 day.

Almaty same. You shoould visit the park with the wooden church (Ascension Cathedral) and the most impressive sovjet WW 2 monument ever.

have fun
