Phuket and Halong BayHi All,
It seems to me that the carst scenery in both places is at least similar if not identical. If that's so, is there a reason to visit both? And if one is 'enough', isn't Phuket more pleasant?

1Each destination has unique beauty which another can not be similar. So, if you have condition you can travel both Phuket and Halong Bay. But if you must to choose one of them, I think Ha Long Bay is idea destination. You know HaLong Bay is one of natural wonder world. So, I beleive this place will make me never disappointed.

2Now that you mention it, there might a superficial resemblance between some of the Andaman Sea island and Ha Long, but it's something that never struck me while I was there, and there is certainly zero similarity between the experiences.
Phuket and environs is a beach vacation: you swim, you snorkel, you see coral and schools of fish. Ha Long is a cruise. You sit on a deck and watch cliffs slip by, you go ashore and hike around tiny karst islands.
It's considerably less redundant than visiting both Bangkok and London.
As for which is "better", obviously tastes vary, but for me, Ha Long is exquisitely beautiful, but you basically look at it (and say, "wow"). I would think two days would be plenty.
I, most people, could live on Phuket. If you're tired of snorkeling, you could learn to scuba-dive. If you need a break, you could sit on the beach, sipping mai-tais and Thai tea, and watch the sun set. If you want to get away from the sea, you could go camping or river-rafting. If the outdoors begin to pale on you, there are tourist attraction like Fantasea and shooting ranges and zoos.
Think of Ha Long as God's art museum; Phuket is God's amusement park.

3i pretty much agree with everything malvolio mentioned above, but i also feel that the water in Halong bay is not as clean compared to phuket. or maybe catching an infection after swimming there has made me biased. but i still think one should experience both, if possible.

4Same same but different...
HLB you are on a Junk in the ocean, a unique and different way to view the surroundings, where as Phuket, has no Junks, so not the same. I also think HLB is a more dramatic and impressive amount of karst, where as compared to Phuket area, its more tropical and landscape style...

It wouldn't surprise me. Phuket is basically in the open ocean in the middle of nowhere. Ha Long Bay is a bay (so less water turn-over) near a heavily traveled sea-lanes.
I didn't go in the Ha Long water because it was cold.
That's certainly true. Ha Long looks like this while Phuket looks like this.
And something I always have to tell people about Ha Long: it really looks like that.
