The beach or Maylamyine?Hi everybody. We have five days or to spare at the end of a Burma trip in late December after touring up north and we're trying to decide where to spend them. We'd be departing from Yangon.
The options for us, as we see it, are either one of the western beaches Chaung Tha or Ngwe Saung, which we'd reach by bus or car, or the train trip to Maylamyine and back.
Any advice from people who know both locations? Which option would you choose? And if it's the beach - which onhe? Thanks.

you can decide one day before, when you are in Yangoon!
Travelling in Myanmar is not very easy, when you are tired at the end of your trip and you want to have some relaxing days maybe it is better to go to the beach.
But if you have still enough power go to the south! By Train!
Stop in Bago for one night, take one of the Motorbike-Taxis and make a daytrip there. Next day you can go to Moulmein with the same train. Or - better - go only to Thaton and organize a Taxi to go from there to Hpa An. Hpa An and it´s surrounding is a hidden Gem, you will love it! From Hpa An you can take the bus or a Taxi to Moulmein, spend one or two nights there and at the end you can take the train back to Yangoon.

5I found travelling in Myanmar was easy, and never had a problem getting to where I wanted to go, when I wanted to go. Ngapali was the best! A little pricey, but the best beach, food, and music! Will be going to Chaung Tha this year, via ferry from Yangon to Pathein, with friends who need a little more comfort than I!

6Just another option: by train to Moulmein (take the fast = early morning train and reserve seats on the left side of the train; otherwise you'll be sitting in the sun all hours), and then the beach of Setse. No tourists to be found, very local and laid-down. More for walking on the vast beach then for sunbathing in too short shorts: they are not used to that. Not ideal for swimming (- they do) but local fishing villages on both ends of the beach attractive. A side trip to Amherst (very photoscenic and a important religious site) and on the way to Setse the War Cemetery in Thanbyuzayat. (You'll probably get offered tea there as less then 1000 people visit the place - record of 2009: 650 people.)
Mind you, even in Moulmein I fear one has to pre-book hotels / GH nowadays!
Re # 2; instead of taking a taxi from Hpa'an to Moulmein I would prefer a private boat - had a wonderfull trip on the river, one of my highlights that year which I would repeat being there - no taxi for me, which will be about the same price (I paid K 35.000, 2008)
My preferred beach nowadays is Ngwe Saung. Ngapali too busy, Chaungtha more local - very pleasant - but beach bit less attractive.
