Camping in Tanzania
Hey guys, some newbie question.I see a lot of camping options in Tanzania, I am wondering if it's hut type of camping where all I have to bring is my sleeping bag or backcountry type of camping where I have to bring a tent or bivy, and specific designated camp grounds with lion or hyena boxes where they dont steal my food.
Just wondering
Thanks

Not to many "huts" in the Serengeti - more upmarket lodges 5 star facilities. Most "camping options" range from: permanent tented sites (with or without ensuite facilities); semi-permanent tented sites (use park facilities); portable or temporary tents (real camping!) and again use whatever park facilities are operating. In the first expect to pay over $120 US per person per night -- about the only thing you have to pay for are drinks etc; the remainder will charge between $40 - $ 95 US per person per night - again food provided but quality may not be 5 star and in the cheapest options you might be assisting with food preparation. In the cheapest options you will need to provide your own sleeping bag (and other items - towel, soap etc). You will have to pay national park fees on top of the above fees and the prices may increase if you are in a small group (less than 5).
For specific information ask the companies you are considering using what is included and what is not - most will have links to a web site with pictures etc. (Please don't be to picky if the prices I quote are different to those that the companies ask - its a few years since I camped!) Good luck

Gidday Mike!Yep, its still as Mike said.
The cheapest safari options here in Tanzania are around USD170 per person per night for all food and water and the use of their tents and shared bathroom blocks. The places in the Serengeti and most other places in the tourist season are pretty full. At other times not so. A cook is usually provided with this package and you may be asked to help erect and pull down the tent when the time comes.
Its basic but fun and is as cheap as you can get.
You can sleep in your own tent and own sleeping bag but don't expect a discount as it is a matter of choice.
Cheers.

#7 - I think you will find that in the Serengeti if you are using your own vehicle and without an authorised guide, you will have to take a park ranger along. This is just to ensure that: 1] you do not get lost (GPS not all that effective);2] you stay on the approved roads and tracks; 3] you camp only in the camp sites you have been allocated. Additionally, unlike US national parks there a more than a few locals who will love to eat you if you are wandering around at night looking for a pit stop!! So yes please do the right thing by the environment, the park, and the people of Tanzania!
