Antarctica from Argentina

I am looking into the options to travel to Antarctica from Argentina in 2014. I have seen a number of costly trips which are all inclusive, but was wondering if there was a possibility of completing the journey by myself. I understand from what I have read that this may be unachievable due to lack of accomodation etc. but was wondering if any seasoned travellers can provide me with advice - Would it be possible, for example, to "tag along" on a fishing boat or supplies ship to antarctica and arrange accomodation on arrival?

I am just pondering wether I need to spend all that money, although the benefits of a good guide and relative comfort are all the more important in this particular leg of my trip!

If anyone has done this trip it would be good to get some feedback, also the cheapest providers etc.

Any suggestions will be welcome

No to the 'tag along' and therefore 'no' to the accommodation. What kind of accommodation would you expect to find?

Yeah it doesn't work like that. There is no accomodation on arrival anyway, let alone a way to DIY.

Actually you can DIY to an extent with your own scientific expedition, but it will cost a hell of a lot more than the ~$5k US for the boat trip.

Depending upon your nationality you could always try to get a job at a research station in Antarctica. I did that a few years ago and have since spent over 30 months in Antarctica.

What sort of job did you get within the research company and with which company did you go with?

I work in logistics at a US station. The US program operations are contracted out to Lockheed Martin but most of the non-science jobs are hired by a company called P&E. Jobs are only open to US citizens. However many other countries have stations in Antarctica and probably have a similar setup.

Australian station jobs are open to Australian citizens only as well.

As far as I know, as long as you respect the treaty, you can DIY anyway you want. Of course you would have to have very deep pockets (much deeper then taking a organized trip) but there is no governing body stopping you from going to the continent, they can only stop you from stepping foot on their stations. Antarctica is not a country, anyone who is crazy enough to go can't be stopped by visas ect. Bring your own accommodations though.

I see your from the UK so if you really want to get there and don't have the funds to diy then the Antarctica British Survey is your best bet. I think they just merged with a Oceanic Survey branch of the government so I think they are downsizing though. Good luck
