Tour through TurkmenistanI will be booking a tour as below for September/October 2012. However it
is very expensive as a lone traveller. Is anybody interested in below itinerary
for all or part of it? They must be interested in desert archaeological sites
of which there are many in Turkmenistan.
There will probably be camping & some very islolated spots. I'm bringing all my gear
including tent in backpack. It will be getting cold at night.
Of course I will be doing the usual tourist spots.
There will be either a double entry visa or two entry visas. Entering from Uzbek,
exiting to Iran & return through Turkmenistan after three weeks in Iran.
Could I save myself the cost & do all this with a Transit Visa? Would you get hassled
in border areas by yourself?
Entry 1: Days:
1: Hojeyli - Konya Urgench – 17th September
2: Konya Urgench - Derweze
3: Derweze - Ashgabat
4 & 5: Ashgabat - Dehistan - (visiting sites) - Gudurolum Border Pass. Cross into Iran – 21st September.
Entry 2: Days
1: Saraghs – Merv – 12th October
2 & 3: Merv & Surrounding areas including Afghan border
4: Merv – Turkmenabat – Farab – 15th October.

1Remember Gonur Tepe when visiting Merv.
Consider doing at least 1 of the tours on a transit visa unless you want a guide. The Mary/Merv and Gonur Tepe is a huge area and the archaeology stretches over millenia. A good guide can tell you a lot about the places. I had an extremely good guide, Oleg, from stantours when visiting that area. He knew about everything about the history.

Have spoke to Stantours, and they think it is too late to get in until mid sept now. Have already got my Iranian visa sorted.

A couple things I did want do we're over night at Daravaza gas crater, lake koh-ata, weekend in ashgabat. And maybe Yangykala canyons as well as mere. Open to suggestions, what did you have in mind?

7Hi damienminter, I will be starting this tour on September 9th from Ashgabat with Owadan. Itinerary is as follows:
Day 1 09.09 Ashgabat
Day 2 10.09 Ashgabat – Nohur
Day 3 11.09 Nohur - Ashgabat - (flight to) Dashoguz
Day 4 12.09– Dashoguz- Kunyaurgench -Darwaza
Day 5 13.09 Darwaza-Ashgabat-(flight to) Mary
Day 6 14.09 Mary – Turkmenabat
Day 7 15.09 Turkmenabat - Farap
About Yangykala conyons, I also asked for that in the beginning, but in the end I decided to cut that, too far and not so many days, more interesting things included, XD...also thought about Dehistan, but same case, and is better Nohur to visit.
Tour ends in Farap because then I am crossing to Uzbekistan.
Please let me know asap also if you are interested and I can send you the complete details and consult with my contact in Owadan how much would be the price for both of us.

8Guys, I just got my Iranian visa finally. As I'm leaving in 40hrs you can imagine the horror. 58 days since I started applying...
I could join you for the Kunyaurgench - Darwaza - Ashgabat leg. I just need to apply for Turkmen visa in Tashkent. Are you on some pre-arranged tour or anything?
I still have to make up my mind whether to go back from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan and then through Turkmenistan to Iran or to get directly from Afghanistan to Iran. Opting for Turkmenistan leaves me with seeing probably only Mazar in Afghanistan...
