travel from Mexico coast to Belize to get married

My boyfriend and I are looking to travel from Cancun (we are flying from London.. we are both British) and arriving Cancun in January to travel along the Mexican coast and checking out Mayan and aztec temples and beaches of the Riveria Maya coast ( anythingelse of interest) to cross into Belize...to get married... and enjoy a beautiful relaxing honeymoon. We heard Mexico is strict on blood tests, translation costs etc whereas I am sensing Belize is cheaper and simpler in terms of Registra etc, no blood tests, although I dont know about paying for translations costs?

Does anyone know a beautiful beach /area in Belize suitable for weddings? Just two of us , bride and groom, and we will have to have two witnesses and a Minister but we prefer flexibility to write our own vows and it be spiritual than religious. A very simple , but beautiful wedding on a budget!

Also, we are giving ourselves just over three weeks from Cancun to cross over Belize in total ( 1 week to 10 days Mexico) the rest in Belize.. is that realistic timescale? is it easy to cross the border ? Do I need to apply for a visa beforehand?

I know there are many parts to all my questions.. but if anyone can help on any of my questions, Id really appreciate it!

cheers people
: ) Samantha

Ambergris Caye would be the best place. A lot of people come here to get married, so you will be able to arrange all the formalities and photographer. Caye Caulker is another island, but the beaches aren't as nice as AC and everything you need for a wedding might not be available.

Getting there is easy if you get the water taxi from Chetumal -- 2 per day, about a 90 minute trip and about US$30 each way (check the websites for schedules and fares -- the links are on the BelizeBus site -- the link to that is on my profile page).

There are a few people who make all the wedding arrangements for you for a fee. I'll attach the links to a private message, so the forum police can't accuse me of advertising. You might not choose to use a wedding planner, but the websites have some useful information.

For British citizens, crossing the border is easy. You should get a stamp in your passport that allows for a stay of 30 days. It can be re-newed while still in Belize.

Don't think you'll find Aztec ruins along the Mayan Riviera in southern Mexico. For that you'll have to go farther north. The Yucatán peninsula, northern Guatemala and Belize were Maya.

Don't plan on spending any time in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Too tacky. Go to Valladolid and see Chichen Itza from there, and then head to Tulum. From there you can easily get to Belize in a day from Chetumal. Isla Mujeres is also a bit overrated IMHO.

For the wedding check out Robert's Grove in Placencia. I saw pictures of a wedding on their dock, it was beautiful.
