In mid-September Phuket and Krabi are at the height of their wet season and pretty soggy, but Chang is horrifically wet (like the wettest place in Thailand). Which is slightly anomolous, since the more southerly gulf (Phangan etc) are still pretty dry then. Unless you're amphibious, I'd avoid Chang and go further south in the Gulf.

Have a look here for climate charts all over Thailand in September.

Chang is a bad option in September, can rain a lot. Krabi would be the best.

Maybe change to Koh Tao? or Koh Kood :P (it's beautiful)
I prefer Krabi but November is a good month to go there.
(:

There is only one option for a beach place in mid September - Samui / Phangan / Tao

Elsewhere is the wettest time of the year.

Most of the islands receive little rain in any month except for Chang islands.

That's just not true. Phuket and the islands in that area are very wet in September. Rispin is completely correct - the southern gulf islands are the best bet.

Flying to Koh Samui is just as easy if you're trying to save time. And assuming you're not staying in Krabi town but are going to head for beaches like Railay or islands like Lanta, you'll still have to get boats from Krabi. In which case you could just as easily get a boat to Koh Phangan from Samui. Or stay in Samui. Simples.

That's just not true. Phuket's average rainfall in September is less than 400mm and when it rains it's still warm and often showers last less than 30 minutes or at night. Usually the days are good for the most part.

400mm is a lot of rain. And maybe a shower will last less than 30 minutes. But there will be a lot of them - I've been in that area at that time on numerous occasions when it's pissed down for most of the day, with the odd outbreak of sunshine. And whether it's "still warm" or not is irrelevant.

Seems that the world weather patterns are completely crazy these days...Just spent 2 full weeks in Phuket and Krabi (rainy season) and today was the first rain I've seen. It actually poured for part of the day...otherwise - gorgeous sunny days for 2 full weeks!...Also have seen some "upside-down" weather in Bali these past few years with ran in the dry season and dry in the rainy season, so go figure...? I think "rainy seasons" are overrated and most of the time it's a showers and sun mix and the occasional all day pour....perfect for reading a book in a cafe...

I've spent lots of time on the Andaman coast during this so called wet season and it hardly rains.
