Athens accomodation?
Hi,I've found a few hotels in Athens that look pretty good for about €40 a night. Reviews sometimes criticize the dangerous areas they're in. I'm wondering if anyone has any special places for around that price that would be located in convenient areas - walking distance of within 25mins to major sites, or just areas with decent, funky restaurants and bars and cafes (not upscale). We're travelling at the end of September...
Thanks!

Hi....I know Athens quite well.
I wouldn't consider decent (if any at all) hotels - to be in dangerous areas.
What exactly have you read - and where did you see the reviews?

Hi,I've looked at a few on Trip Advisor. I looked at some hostels with private rooms but they seem to be more expensive. One hotel is Evripides Hotel. I'm not really worried too much about so-called "dangerous" areas - sometimes the gritty parts of the city are the most atmospheric and fun. But it pays to check things out, so here goes...

Hi,Thanks for the responses. This place seems to be the best deal and is only 800m from Plaka. The management at the hotel also seem nice, answering questions quickly online, etc, unlike some more upscale places. They say that some of the streets are quite dark at night, but not dangerous. I'm hoping it's sort of like el ravel in Barcelona... (maybe that's too optimistic, but that's how it sounds when you search around online, with its "bohemian bars" and trendy restaurants...)

Athens generally isn't really a well-kept city. I was there this summer and I spent a bit of time in the neighbourhood that Evripides is in and it a bad area. I didn't feel to concerned about walking there at night.Actually it wasn't far from some bustling nightlife.

Thanks BthDth. I tend to loose my English nowadays... Of course I meant drugs.Misanthrope, now you wouldn't expect hotel people to tell you that area is dangerous, would you?
I have not been in Barcelona, but as I said on previous post, there are no decent bars or restaurants open at night around the hotel area. Thisio, Plaka, Syndama is a different matter, and a bit further away, Gazi area.

maybe this message is a little bit late but i will give you my oppinion. Avoid all hotels around Omonia square. Prefer to stay near Acropolis area. there are several hotels but i don't know exactly the prices. Have a look for Philipos Hotel, Athens backpackers, Herodio hotel (maybe more expensive) and in general other hotel close this area. Even in plaka (the old part of athens) you can find lots of hotel on this price. From Omonia square and souther...like metaksourgio square etc i would advice you "Don't go!!"Have a nice stay!
