Extending time in Malaysia--visa run or renew in KL?On Monday we are either going to go to the immigration office in PutraJaya (government part of Kuala Lumpur) and extend our stay in Malaysia, or take a bus to Singapore for the day to get a new pass.
I am an American, and we only want 1 extra month.
We have been staying in Melaka the last 3 months, and we want to extend our time here to celebrate Hari Raya with friends instead of try to travel during the holiday season on Sumatra (our next stop).
I've read that the visa extension in KL take about a half day and that it's easy, except for the bureaucratic slog. What paperwork do I need to bring if I do this? (passport photos/bank account... etc.. any necessary?) Also, what is the price? I've seen both 50RM and 100RM written around the internet.
If we go to Singapore, I've read that it's better to spend a night or 2 there, but I've also read of people turning around same day. Any accounts of hassles for doing that?
We don't have any interest paying singapore price for a hotel room when we've got a cozy homestay in Melaka already.

2In 1999 I entered Malaysia from Thailand, telling immigration I was planning to spend two weeks there. The guy said 'ok, I give you two months'. When I unexpectedly ended up staying longer, when the visa was about to run out, I went to the immigration office in KL and had my visa extended. Took quite some time and wasn't exactly fun. While waiting there I noticed some blonde girls who had been rounded up. Perhaps these were Russian prostitutes.
Should I need to extend my visa again nowadays I would simply go to Singapore for a day or two, then reenter Malaysia. Singapore is a very interesting city, always worth a trip.
I also remember in 1999 I met on Tioman a Japanese guy who was actually working (illegally) in Malaysia. He had his own diving school and did visa runs every three months.

3Thank you for your account and links.
Singapore is great and I might just end up going there for the visa run (for anyone needing a whole 3 months, it makes complete sense to exit and re-enter). However, I only need 1 month, I have accommodations in Melaka already, and would rather not spend the night in Singapore if I can manage--fun, but pricey. I'm used to taking the Melaka-KL bus about every other week, so spending a few hours in KL queuing, though not fun, could be faster and cheaper.
However, the best source I've found online is the travelfish link above. And even that one had me confused. Partially, the address given doesn't show up on the website linked to for the government department. I first thought I'd have to go to Putrajaya, now it seems the office is in KL...
If it wasn't a weekend, I'd call the office to confirm the details before getting on the bus to KL, but since it was the weekend, I thought I'd check on other people's experiences.
Perhaps there isn't anyone who found 3 hours at the office was more convenient than a whole weekend in Singapore... or is the experience renewing your social pass so horrible, that it's better to leave the country?
These are the details I'd love to have confirmed:
--paperwork they asked for

6I agree with #5. Between a bus and budget accommodations, you will have a much more pleasant time with a weekend trip to Singapore than dealing with Putra Jaya. Besides, since Putra Jaya is in the middle of no where, after you've spent time and money to get there and back -- Singapore is the much better option.
