First Time Safari Suggestions

We are looking to book a safari in December. This will be a first for my family. Our tour is not booked yet. Travel agent suggested a Big 5 Tour for 6 days. For those who have gone on a safari, I would like to hear which tour, which location/country you enjoyed best? Safety issues? We will be traveling with a teenage daughter. Are we safe as Americans traveling to these locations?

I couldn't pick out one country as being the best, I've never been on a safari that wasn't good, but either Kenya or Tanzania would be great for a first visit. The safari business in both countries is well established and there are plenty of operators to choose from.

I have been looking at the various sites for planning a safari tour. The problem I have is doing the tent safari. And these packages seem to be no less than one week and eventhough I was planning on spending a week in Africa I am wondering if I want to spend a week doing safaris? Is a one day safari outing enough or would I be missing something?

If you have visions of sleeping bags and roll mats, stop now - a tented camp can be as luxurious as the fanciest hotel. There is nothing quite like spending time out in the bush, it's a wonderful experience. Expect comfortable beds and a shower with a view.

IMO a first time safari of just 1 day is not enough, but if you insist, Ngorongoro is probably the best place to see a variety of animals in a very short time. I'd strongly recommend more than 1 day though, 3 or 4 would be much better. There's no fixed time you have to go for, just tell the operator how many days you want and they'll come up with a plan.

Kaz, thank you for your insight. Some of what I have been reading on these various tour sites is that you are bring your own sleeping bags which of course we cannot do and not really what we are looking for. It is good to know that a person would need to have a few days for a safari. Your advise was helpful.
