Help on 5 week trip, beginning stages of planning

Hey everyone! I am traveling to Vietnam mid February to mid March 2013, will be in Vietnam for 5 weeks total. This will be my first trip to Asia! Anyways....I've read through my LP guide book and picked out some of the most interesting sounding destinations, however I wanted to get some advice on which locations might be best for me. I will be traveling with my boyfriend, we are both in our early 3o's, prefer budget accommodations, as cheap as we can get as long as it's not a dorm room. I do not like obscenely touristy destinations, for example, even if the city/town itself is a wonderful place, if I'm being constantly hassel-ed or ripped off, I would rather go somewhere more off the beaten track. I understand I'm going to be hassled, but some places are much worse than others, I'm sure you know what I mean :) Anyways...so here's the towns/cities etc. that I think look interesting, any advice would be great, for example, are the places I've picked repetitive? Like too many islands etc? Which national park is best for wildlife? We like beaches, beautiful scenery, good/cheap food, secluded spots, and yes, I know I cannot fit all these places into my trip but I will narrow it down later, thanks!

Mekong-Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Can Tho, Ca Mau, Phy Quoc Island, Ba Chuc, Chau Doc
Central Highlands-Cat Tien National Park
South Central-Son My, Quy Hoa Beach, Dai Lanh Beach, Nha Tranng, Whale Island, Con Duo Islands
Central-Vinh Moc Tunnels, Khe Sanh Combat Base, Hue, Bach Man National Park, Hoi An, Cham Isls, My Son
North Central-Phong Nha-Ke Bank National Park
Northeast-Ba Be National Park, Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay? Cat Ba National Park, Cao Bang
FYI, Yes, I'm def going to HCMC and Hanoi!

''North Central-Phong Nha''
I have not been there but have been to the Paradise Cave. People I have met that have been to both have said I made the right choice. So maybe you could research them and decide which maybe better.

'...I do not like obscenely touristy destinations...'
Yet you are going to Hoi An. You could stay in Da Nang instead and do Hoi An as a day trip. There is a regular bus (from Le Duan street area) between the two.

You please choose these places for your trip:
1: Halong bay
2: Phong Nha-Ce Bang Cave
3: Hoi an-Da Nang
4: Nha Trang Beach
In my opinion, theses places will meet your demand.

um, you are well prepared. Because you like beach, cheap food and beautiful scenery so I suggest Da Nang beach and Hoi An old city (Old quarter street combinate with Japanese chinese culture) near there (a lot of street food, many kind of cake, people very nice...)
Hue, former imperial court, outstanding scenery
PhongNha Ke Bang
Nha Trang beach is wonderful too
If interested in mountain and minority group peole, you can visit SaPa (go from Hanoi)

About the national park, I don't understand so much.
When you come to Hanoi, or want to ask anything about Hanoi, I can help you through email

Thanks for the recs, I did not have Danang on my list because I tend to stay away from bigger cities, however if it's worth it I will stay here and do a day trip to Hoi An, or possible just stop into Hoi An for one day on my way to my next stop? Paradise Cave does sound better than Phon Nha, thanks!

Hoi An is touristy but I think it definitely deserves more than a day trip. I stayed a few days here and loved it. Nice beach too.

Phu Quoc is amazing by the way. We stayed 4 days and it wasnt long enough.

If it helps, have a read of my trip review from October last year. We visited a lot of the same places you mention.
