Caye Caulker and beaches

We will be on Caye Caulker in March for a week and will snorkel, of course. We were wondering though whether or not the beaches are good for swimming. We have an eight-year-old, so are thinking about something suitable for her.
Thanks for your advice.

Let's say that you can swim!

I wouldn't go as far as 'good for swimming'...there aren't really beaches as such. There is a bit of space on the north tip (of the southern half of the Caye) where many people swim. Its pretty shallow and crowded....

Then you can swim from the small jetties on the south side of the Caye...but there is no beach there, and there is some sea grass...don't know if a child would be too keen on that ;-)

For swimming beaches look at Placencia and Hopkins. For beaches where you can swim and snorkel look at Tobacco and South Water Cayes and Glover's Atoll.

Your eight year old will love Caye Caulker.

The beach they have recently built across from the Rainbow Hotel is good....probably a better place than the spit. Although, you can't beat the 2 for 1 rum punches!
