Tourist Visas to Libya Suspended

I just received confirmation this morning that The Ministry of Tourism here in Tripoli, Libya has STOPPED issuing tourist visas for the time being. The word is that the soonest they would begin again is after Ramadan, but we'll have to see.

Maybe it has something to do with change of government after the elections. I guess new minister will have to deal with these things. Hopefully someone will finally scrap that guide-is-a-must thing, that is just stupid remnant of the Gaddafi.

I think it actually has to do with too many people trying to come in for business under the cheaper tourist visas. We trust that the situation will be resolved soon!

I just contacted Libya Tours and Travels yesterday about a possible tour in december and they said visas were no problem.

Yes, since tourist visas have been no problem in recent months, we expect this situation to be resolved once Ramadan ends (that's what I've heard), so travel in upcoming months should not be a problem again.

Just a note that there has been no update on tourist visas to Libya yet. Ramadan is due to end this weekend, so hopefully as offices get back to regular work schedules after that, there will be an update and we hope the visas will resume. Also, just so you are aware, if you are looking to travel soon...there is a 3 day holiday here in Libya with the end of Ramadan, so if you're looking for business visas or any other paperwork to come through in the next several days, it will likely not be until later next week that offices are back in business again.

Still no word on Tourist Visas starting back up again. I will do my best to post again as soon as I find out anything more positive. For now, travelers are still able to get in on business visas pretty easily, but they're still pretty pricy.

Ok for the business visa (even if it is very expensive).
But what about entering from Tunisia at Ras Adjir (with my car): How I can be sure that the border post is open for tourists?

My recommendation on this would just be to keep watching the news. There's no easy way to know. I haven't heard that it's been closed again recently...and I know of some others who came across no problem a few weeks ago. It might be helpful to even go to the border post the day before you plan to cross just to be sure all is set for the following day and even get the papers to fill out for your car...just an idea that I heard some others did.

And if it's not open, what can I do?
Wait in Tunisia? It can seem a little boring if it lasts a few days and may be after that the border is always closed....
