Is it safe to stay in Anaheim?

Hi everyone.

We have 8 days booked in Anaheim in November but I have had some doubts as to whether we should stay out there. Anaheim has been on the news a lot about gangs, shootings, stabbings, violence and protests.
I'm not familiar with the area and we are staying at a motel about 15 minutes walk away from the Disneyland main gates.
Is this crime just in particular parts of Anaheim or is it a big media exaggeration?
Any advice would be great.
Also, if anyone doesn't recommend Anaheim, where would you suggest to stay in LA that has budget accommodation.

Thanks again

You may want to look here.

I did not find this website to be the most "user-friendly" that I have ever encountered but it will give you an idea. I opened Google Maps as well so that I could more easily see in the shaded areas.

Disneyland is in the "Katella Ave / West St" neighborhood on the website. According to the site, you could be very safe or very unsafe depending on which direction your 15-minute walk lies. Most of the hotels cluster on Ketella Ave, and Harbor Blvd. on the south and east edge of the park. Don't cross to the east of I-5, the Santa Ana Freeway. Yes, neighborhoods in greater Los Angeles can change that suddenly. The incident that has Anaheim in the news was an incident where a cop allegedly shot and allegedly killed an allegedly un-armed alleged "gang-banger." That particular incident will probably be forgotten by the time you arrive.

If this were I, I'd screw the walk and rent a car. You'll do plenty of walking at Disneyland. You'll need/want a car if you plan to visit anything else in Los Angeles besides Disneyland. A car will also make the trip from LAX less of an "ordeal by bus or taxi."

For the record, nobody walks in greater Los Angeles.

Say "Hi!" to Mickey for me.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I'm currently booked into a hotel that is 415 west karella. It's just west of the High way you told me to stay clear of. But I was wanting to changing to 1221 south harbor boulevard but I think (travel agent map isn't very detailed) that it is JUST east of freeway. It's closer to Disneyland however and much nicer but no help if it's in a bad area.
I can't load that map on my iPhone but will for sure have a look at it.

Thanks again

Go for the 1221 S. harbor Blvd. hotel. Closer for your visit to the Mouse House and CA Adventure. Rent the car. After 2 days in Anaheim leave for LA. Stay here Beverly Laurel Motor Inn. Check the reviews on Tripadvisor and you'll see why I recommend this spot to family and friends. Good neighborhood, Swingers is attached and you can easily walk to the venerable Farmer's Market (3rd and Fairfax) and the Grove. The La Brea Tar Pits and Page Museum are a longer walk but doable and people DO walk in LA. You can drive up to Hollywood and Highland to see Grauman's Chinese Theatre then follow Hollywood Blvd East to Vermont, turn left and follow it into Griffith Park to the Observatory. Closed Monday's and Tuesday's. On another day from the Beverly Laurel take Beverly west past the huge shopping center and Cedar Sinai hospital to Santa Monica Blvd. Turn let on SMB and follow it all the way to the Pacific Coast. You'll pass by Beverly Hills, Century City enroute. Spend a day in Santa Monica and Venice. Depending on your preference loads of other stuff to see. Easy drive from the motor inn to Universal City for instance. Welcome to the Megalopolis.

Hollie, I grew up 3 miles from Disneyland and here's my take on Anaheim
The area south of Disneyland- along Harbor Blvd and south of Katella- is quite safe. There is
a area that's a bit dodgey just west of Disneyland (west of "West Street"). Just keep in mind
the recent reports of violence in Anaheim are due to a police shooting which many residents say
was unjustified. Each year, unfortunately, tens of thousands of Americans die from gunshots.
The problem is not unique to Anaheim. Sadly, it is uniquely American.

Both hotels are in a perfectly safe area day or night. The one on Katella probably has an access to a shuttle bus.

The anti-police protests are at the police station or city hall area. Nowhere near the magic kingdom. No gangs in the Disney area.
