1 week in Norway

Hey folks.

I am from England but have been entranced by Norway over the last few months. I have a weeks holiday mid August and there is nothing more I want to do than to visit Norway. I have read up extensively on the country as a whole and have purchased a travel guide (Lonely Planet). After trawling through these forums I have gathered that the best place to spend my one week is exploring the Western Fjords. My plan was to fly from Manchester to Oslo and take the train from there to Bergen and explore from there. The only problem (?) is that I plan to go alone and have never done anything like this before. Is camping the best/cheapest option? Or can I just walk into a hotel/hostel on the off-chance they may have a vacancy for the night? I have found a very reasonably priced flight but it goes to Rygge airport. The site mentions a free shuttle to Gardermoen unless I'm mistaken, and after purchasing the Minipris ticket, getting to Bergen would not be a problem. It's just after that. What mode of transport is best to visit the fjords? Is Bergen the best place to be for the week or should I travel around the coast? I understand that this is very last minute but Norway has taken me by storm and I need to go sooner rather than later.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the swift reply :)

I do have the possibility yes, but the train journey from Oslo to Bergen is one of the main reasons I'm going. And yeah more time would be ideal but I could only get one week off from work :/

Am I best to book a hostel for the week, or move around and book different ones on the day? Or is camping plausible?

Thanks

Of course camping is plausible. If you have the right spirit, bring a small tent and a minimum of camping gear. Take some public transport just out of Bergen and try hitch-hiking, avoiding the main roads. If it's raining too much or to get a good shower, rent a camping hut for the night. There you will also have a place to store your backpack while day-hiking to some place of interest.

It's pointless and a waste of time going to Gardermoen if you're heading for Bergen. Buy a train ticket from Rygge to Bergen (there's a free shuttle bus to the station according to the airport website). Note that before Aug 6, the first part of the train west from Oslo will be replaced with bus.

Thanks for the replies, I was unsure about camping due to travelling alone and it being my first time doing so. But looking into it camping would be the best way to view the scenery the western fjords have to offer. And yes I intended to take the train from Rygge to Bergen but I meant that there is a train switch in Oslo. Luckily I'm going Aug 12th - 19th ;)

OK but a free shuttle to Gardermoen is completely irrelevant for your travel.

If you want to see the scenery of the fjords, I would recommend taking one of the public transport boats or ferries. Prices are not too bad, and it will give you the opportunity to see the fjords and the mountains from the sea. It is just as spectacular to watch the mountains from the sea, as to watch the sea from the mountains.
