I am an American and my friend wants me to travel to Cali over my winter break from school. He is Colombian and Venezuelan. He has not lived in Cali for over 10 years. He is 24.
This summer I spent a month in Venezuela. I never felt unsafe and even spent a week in Caracas. I read so many bad things about Caracas and mostly found everything to over exaggerated or untrue.
I was planning on spending 2 weeks in Cali and then going back to Merida and then flying out of Cucata.
My question is this. Is Cali really that bad? I see that their is a US travel warning, especially for areas like Cali. My guess is, is that it can't be as "bad" as Caracas. What are your opinions? Also my potential flight arrives in Cali at 11:40 pm. Is it like Caracas and really "dangerous" at night?

Cali is fine, a great place, enjoyable - as safe as other places in Colombia, where, as elsewhere, you need to take care where you are and at what time

2I felt safe in Cali - I walked around at nighttime and it seemed fine to me. There are drug cartels which is why it's considered to be more dangerous than other cities of Colombia but I figure it's unlikely to affect you as a tourist.

3I would wager that Cali is a hundred times safer than Caracas but arriving at Alfonzo Bonilla at nearly midnight there won't be busetas to Cali and you'll have to take a cab at about six times the cost. Alternatively you can just stay in the airport hotel and take a buseta ($6.000) to Cali in the morning. If you choose that option though make a reservation ahead of time because the hotel doesn't have that many rooms.

5I am in Cali and now and have spent a cumulative total of about a year here. Exactly as the other posters say, Cali is as safe as you are smart. I have never had a problem here and have heard of very few problems.
Plus, in Cali, there is no reason to be walking streets at night. Everyone takes cabs to restaurants or clubs.
If you take a cab from the airport to a hostel, whose address you have, everything will be fine.
I am at Jovita's Hostel right now. Free salsa classes and yoga classes and lots of nocturnal outings. Great place.

6Thank you everyone.
Well he has family living in Cali, just like he had family in Caracas. They were very protective of me. I am confident I will be fine. I was just wondering because the warnings seemed more harsh for Cali then Caracas. I was definitely pleasantly surprised with Caracas so hopefully Cali is the same. Plus I am sure the weather will definitely be better than the weather in Pennsylvania in January.
