Istanbul - Location HelpHello,
My girlfriend and I will be spending 6 nights in Istanbul in early Sept. We're interested in sight seeing and enjoying restaurants and nightlife. For our needs many people suggest staying around Taksim square. The best hotels we could find in our budget range are the Golden City Hotel and Galata La Bella, both of which are somewhat south of Taksim square.
My questions are how far are we from all the action? Restaurants? Clubs? Lively streets?
How easily can we navigate around the city via public transit?
Are we better off paying more to stay closer to Taksim square?
Thanks for the help.

1If you did but know it you've picked 2 hotels in ideal positions and far better(and nicer)than Taksim.
They are in Beyoğlu an historic but hip district of the city.Either is close to the tram over to Sultanahmet, the ferry boat station if you want to go over to the Asian side and the funicular up on to Istaklal Street and Taksim if you don't want to walk up the hill. All around you there is plenty of nightlife from lowkey lounge bars to live music nightclubs and some very nice restaurants, the streets of the area are interesting and atmospheric too.
As you are staying for 6 nights choose the hotel which gives you the best price deal, any discounts and/or special offers such as free airport transfers etc. They are close together and very similar in standard and quality so let your wallet decide :) If you can request a sea view room so much the better and it would be worth paying just a little extra for one as the views are stunning both daytime and night.

2Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm under the impression that most of the large parties/clubs are in the Taksim square area. How much do you suspect it'll cost to take a taxi from Golden City Hotel to Taksim square? Are taxi available late at night? Does public transport run all night?

3Actually all the best and better known clubs and bars tend to be around Beyoğlu/Istiklal/Asmalimescit area.Such as Babylon,Roxy,360,Purple,Aysshha,Rittim etc.,are all in this area. The very upmarket Reina,Sortie,Suada,Blackk Clubs are all around Ortaköy and Kuruçeşme area. All the famous meyhanes are also located in the Beyoğlu area too.Thats an evening you should defo experience, very authentic Istanbul!Do some Googling to see which are your taste music and stylewise.
You can get to Taksim by the nostalgia tram which runs the length of Istiklal until midnight which is when all public transport stops, until 06.00.A taxi would be around 10-12TL.
There are always taxi's available but try to avoid using the many more than necessary and when you do need them try to get either your hotel or the bar/club/restaurant to order it for you. This way the driver is less likely to try to cheat you!(make use of box at top right to read up on the taxi scams of Istanbul).Aside from this trams are much quicker too.
Here is a nice blog about meyhanes, clubs and other useful info about Istanbul from my friend Kozano,an Istanbuller and queen of cool :)

5The Hobbit has a nephew in Istanbul who is the co-owner of a popular bar. His name is Selim and he can advise you also about other bars and restaurants to visit in the area. Tell him the Hobbit from Kaş asked you to visit his establishment. He will either throw you out or give you a drink... :-)
