From Blantyre to Cape Maclear
Hey all,We are planning a trip to Malawi in October and would like to go from Blantyre to Cape Maclear. Any recommendations on "affordable" accomodation in Blantyre and Cape Maclear?
We will use Public Transport. What would be the best way to go from Blantyre to Cape Maclear? Is it doable in a day?
Many thanks for all help!
Happy travelling!

Hey Ed - sure you will love Malawi!!!We stayed in a great place in Blantyre - Doogles - a lively place with a great bar and best of all a swimming pool!
The AXA bus service we found to be better than taking minibuses around - not as cramped and in most cases cheaper - arrive early to get a seat though!
Cape Maclear is stunning as are most places along the lake. Some of our groups favourites were Senga Bay, Nakata Bay, the islands and Cape Maclear.
Lots of accom choices in Cape Maclear - you can really pick and choose as it caters for all budgets.
We were also on a tight budget and stayed at Malambe. This place was not only affordable but had a huge kitchen for us to use which turned out great for the budget ;0) Very clean, great views - we had a wonderful time there!
We then jumped onto the Ilala ferry - if you have time, this is also a must!
Happy travels...

Best budget places in Blantyre is Doogles or a bit quieter would be Chez Makys or Casa Mia. Doogles is great as near the bus station. Careful of your belongings though as you walk through Wenela Bus Station! Other budget options in Blantyre can be found here http://www.explore-malawi.com/hotels-in-blantyreBus to Monkey Bay from Limbe/Blantyre is best option but will take a bit longer at the moment as the Limbe-Zomba road is being re done so is very dusty and lots of offroad! If you need to stop on route then try Nanchengwa Lodge near Mangochi- http://www.explore-malawi.com/Nanchengwa_Lodge
Once at Monkey Bay you can hitch a ride into Cape Maclear- lots of great options in Cape- Gecko Lounge is popular backpackers, so is Fat Monkeys or we love Domwe Island as it is a bit quieter! For lots of choice of places to stay in Cape Maclear see this list http://www.explore-malawi.com/hotels-in-cape-maclear-lake-malawi-national-park
Have fun- and remember October will be hot hot hot so plan lots of Lake Malawi time and try and take a snorkelling trip in Cape Maclear- not great to swim straight from the beach there.
