Need advice for a 3 week trip starting sept. 9th

Hi. My wife and I are traveling around Italy for three weeks in September and would love some advice on an Itinerary. We are planning on taking the train for all of it if possible. We are starting out in Rome. The places we would like to see are Rome, cinque terre, Venice,Pompei but are very flexible. We are also possibly considering the Como area. We want to see a bit of the main touristy spots like the Sistine chapel but get tired of the touristy crowded area's fairly quickly. We also are ocean, food and wine lovers. We are hoping to see as much of Italy as possible but don't want to be constantly on the move. Also any advice on traveling on the train would be great as we really don't know much about it. We just decided to go so we have a fair amount of research to do now. Thanks very much in advance, any advice would be very appreciated.

You get tired of busy touristy area fairly quickly but you are going to Pompei, Rome, Venice and Cinque Terre as do the majority of tourists in Italy. Lake Como is not far behind either. Maybe you should rehtink where you want to go.

You want to see more of the countryside? Just pick a town or something along the way to your big destinations, spend the night? Besides that mate, I don't think Italy has much left that isn't discovered and heavily touristed if it has been. Btw-the Cinque Terre when last I was there was not so heavily visited, do the 4-5 hr hike, I saw maybe 8 people total.

I realise we are going to be in touristy area's for some of the time. I was more referring to alot of the comments I have read about people feeling like cattle and standing in long lines that take forever to get through.
